VS is a preper dream XD

When I first started playing the game, I was completely lost. I had no idea what to do or how to survive, but my spawn point was a couple of minutes from my house, so I starved to death over the course of the spring and summer whitout much reprecusion. During the first year, I completely disregarded foraging for mushrooms, looking for honey, cooking and collecting wood. Why would I need to do any of that? I could just eat berries and get what I needed any time. God of fools. One morning I woke up and saw everything starting to freeze. At first, I was excited, but I soon noticed that my crops were dying. Thank God I had 60 carrots in my cellar; those would carry me through the winter... winter lasted SEVEN MONTHS I ran out of food and there were no animals or bees producing anything. The berries rotted quickly, didn't know how to hunt for meat, no animals other than wolves, bears and the occasional chicken. I couldn't even collect wood because I knew that saplings don't grow below freezing and I like to keep my world tidy. I had only one choice: min maxxing. Although it was difficult, it made me dive deeper into the game mechanics and showed me how important it is to be prepared in this game. By now I have built a tower for the mill because I had to bake bread, and using the quern is a pain. I have learned how to use the oven, and I have created greenhouses and a space to farm oak wood. I have also built a pen for chickens and I have mastered the cooking mechanic. I have marked dozens of resin spots and improved I am now in the Iron Age. After my first winter, I feel that I dominate the game, and I'm no longer a beginner. By next winter, I know I will be ready: cellar full of food, jam, pastries, bread, meat stew, wine and maybe even cheese. I will also have a crate full of charcoal, steel tools and armour, as well as a reliable supply of meat, eggs and milk.

That's what I love about Vintage Story, it’s all about infrastructure. Unlike in Minecraft, where a good set of armour, a crafting table and a furnace make you invincible. In Vintage Story, you need storage, food preservation, heating, smithing setups, kilns, farms, roads and proper shelter. Even with the best gear in the game, you won't survive long without proper infrastructure.

If you are in the Iron Age, now is the perfect time to take a break and start preping: building farms, windmills and greenhouses, improving your house, breeding animals and preparing for a comfortable winter so you can progress to the Steel Age. If it's August, I don't think you'll have time for any of that (depending on your latitude). Collect mushrooms, carrots, turnips and any other food you can find, as well as tons of wood. Winter is brutal, there is no food and you freeze to death outside

Villages and complex NPC interactions are planned, but it will take time (years). I think the developers really want to implement a complex NPC system with deep interactions and maybe even a friendship system. Time will tell.

Thanks for the reply. 'Weirdly enough, the single most low-consumption activity you can do is just stand still.' Well, that's a bummer, it breaks the immersion, but it's good to know.
-
Some people say it does. It's not shown in the 'C' menu, though. But it makes so much sense! Does sitting reduce food consumption, or have I been wasting my time by sitting around while waiting?

It looks great. It seems to be quite feature-rich. If a modder can do it, imagine what the official developers can do! I would have thought smoke and chiselled blocks would be problematic, but the game seems to handle them quite well. I think it hasn't been added either because it's not a priority, or because it would disrupt the early stages of the game. Without a chisel you would need to break a block which would leave you with an open room.

I recall hearing a YouTuber say that a smoke mechanic similar to the one in Valheim is coming to Vintage Story at some point, but I haven't been able to find any information about it. Is this planned, or have the developers said anything about it? I would love it, I already make chiselled chimneys and smoke extractors for every indoor campfire.

It takes too long to travel 100k blocks, you won't make it without good food and gear. I recommend to start over. -
Terraria really figured out how to manage inventory, the best system I have ever seen. Unfortunatelly the mod is outdated.
-
Thanks for the mod. That was actually my first choice, but I don't want to craft new containers, I want as little bloat as possible. But I love the UI integration SpearAndFang made there.

thinner birch, and intermediate tree stage, and other small tree species.

I would also love to see dynamic ecosystems where trees continue to grow over time, meaning that the longer you wait, the more wood you get. The older the tree, the higher the likelihood of beehives, mushrooms and sap appearing. -
Adding an inventory sorting feature would make gameplay smoother by reducing the time spent on tedious organisation. With so many items to manage, a simple sorting feature would keep inventories organised without breaking the sense of immersion. VS already has a lot of quality of life features, so I don't see how an inventory sorting system would be a bad addition. I really like Xandus Inventory Tweaks, but it adds a new window doesn't feel well integrated. Here are some ideas that I think would make managing inventory much better: UI buttons for sorting and transfer all common items to the storage container and viceversa. Mouse wheel click for sorting Mouse wheel to transfer one item at a time I don't think it's worth elaborating much further. Let me know if there's a reason why the developers are against sorting, I'm genuinely curious.
