  1. Then you should refund the product. I am not saying this to be dismissive, it sounds like you cannot be comfortable or feel safe using this game or product, and if you are not exaggerating at all, there is nothing that Anego or their community can do to assuage that. If you are this worried and this uncomfortable with the idea of using Anego's software, if your trust is THIS broken, there is nothing they can do. You are just smearing the walls on your way out at this point or venting extreme, borderline manic emotional distress which isn't healthy to do in a public space. At the very least, I recommend taking a step away for a day or two to collect your thoughts and consider what, if anything, you're asking for or want from this exercise of castigation. I also don't think you have a very good grasp of the different forms malware takes or comes in, it very much sounds like you are currently directly accusing Anego of actively and maliciously compromising your data which is a serious accusation and was not the purpose of either the code in the community APIs or in Vintage Story itself. You're also accusing them of partaking in the active development of this malicious software, which is not the case from anything I've read on this situation. This is the reason for things like the 'censorship'. It was overzealous, but these kind s of accusations are serious and were, especially in the early morning of this whole controversy, extremely inflammatory and speculative. If you're so worried you are considering legal action against Anego, I don't know what to tell you except that without some shift in perspective or some very significant change in the information we have available., there's nothing here for you now.
  2. It appears to be a walking stick with a lantern attached from the Adventurer's Walking Stick mod.
  3. From my understanding butchering only reduces your yield when carving in the field, though sometimes it reduces it to nearly nothing. The problem here is that without knowing exactly what mods ARE running we can't know for sure if it's a bad interaction or an issue with the client itself.
  4. Thank you, I do recall seeing that post by Maltiez now. My last point wasn't to downplay the legality or illegality of the actions but to point out that it's very unlikely Anego is going to be 'prosecuted into oblivion' or held legally liable for the situation at this point in time as some people were deeply worried about. I also don't put a lot of stock into the conflation of legality and morality, but that's more philosophical at this point. Especially because I don't think the actions taken were either legal nor ethical. It's clear that Anego, at least as of the last official statement, see Maltiez's intentions and targets as mitigating even considering the lazy shortcut of just blacklisting any mod with a certain threshold of obfuscation resulted in collateral. They've probably also got their hackles up a bit with the fervor and vitriol they've been feeling since this all blew up overnight.
  5. The main issue, from what I can tell, is that it is currently somewhat hard to know the exact scope of collateral damage because elements of the community escalated from zero-to-eleven immediately. There's a lot of misinformation and vague information floating around, and while I can sympathize with discord managers wanting to contain things so that the discussion didn't spiral into panic and misinformation, that was already too late by the time they started cracking down on people not obeying the posting rules overzealously. What we do know is what the code did and didn't do. It targeted a particular paid mod that was used for griefing and disruption of servers (not necessarily of the server's activity, but economic and balance disruption?). The way it detected the activation of this mod, unfortunately, was by detecting obfuscated code above a certain percentage and so when a server itself had other mods with obfuscated code activated, it caught these 'bystanders' as collateral. It did not target the servers themselves, but functionally simulated a modding incompatibility and triggered irregularly timed client-side crashes. It would then redirect any crash logging to other mods and mask config.lib's involvement by pretending the 'incompatibility' was somewhere else. I'm not exactly clear on if mods by Maltiez OTHER than config.lib were smuggling the killcode? I've heard that said multiple times but it's also kind of vaporous? I figured config.lib's means of interacting with other mods already is why it was ideal for smuggling the killcode.Similarly it seems like a lot of people have taken to throwing massive numbers out of 'victims', despite the code having no means of actually tracking those affected. It's pretty likely even Anego's numbers are tied to projections based on manually reported crash logs that fit the suspect criteria? Though I'm not a hundred percent sure that's the case. I'm not sure THEY have accurate numbers and I do think it was somewhat irresponsible for them to say 'Only a hundred cheaters' were affected. There have been claims that the mod destroyed saves, but saves are server side and the mod only activates on multiplayer instances, it could not cause a crash and poorly timed corruption of save data for a client because it did not trigger in singleplayer. There are repeated statements that Anego 'knew all along, or at least since february and tacitly supported Maltiez', but this seems to be from a miscommunication in the early panic of the outrage when a dev claimed that Maltiez had told them SOMETHING, but it became apparent they didn't have the full scope of the situation at the time. Additionally there is constant chatter of legal liability and criminality but it's hard to say how seriously something like this would be taken in a court in the EU. There's a good chance it was criminal, but so is double-parking. It's very likely due to the limited scope and immaterial damage beyond frustration and time wasted that it would ever see the light of day, but people's lives have been ruined over pettier things, especially in courts that don't understand technology. Anego has steered a clean ship for a decade now, and even if this is rough seas and they choose to power through, I don't see a material reality where this sinks it. I think they'll do fine and keep things going the right way, even if not always perfectly. If it's too much for you, however, take a lifeboat. Get your refund, there's a thousand games out there.
  6. It would be really nice to see a more indepth roadbuilding system or to at least have more material-efficient paths. As is, the vanilla experience for roadbuilding and pathlaying is more an issue on the material end, those paths do not stretch as far as you expect when filling an inventory with them. I love roadbuilding in general, though, and I know there are some mods that make it easier, or at least less intensive on the material cost timesink. Specifically Better Ruins adds blueprints, I believe, one of which is always highly prized by yours truly for quadrupling the output of path blocks when crafting them. Something like this, even late game, would be so beneficial to cutting down on roadwork tedium. Though seeing more diverse types of paths would be great, too.
  7. It would honestly be nice to see more diverse tanning methods in general.
  8. I mean, even if that isn't the direct intention, definitely being inflammatory and nothing but.
  9. I think there are things that can be done going forward, steps that can be taken to make the ModDB a little more secure and transparent, best practices and communications training that can help prevent the miscommunications that escalated the situation further. Etc. Etc. But these things aren't going to 'fix' what has happened. They're definitely not going to convince anyone who is currently frothing at the mouth over 'broken trust' to trust again, and I suspect the only thing firing Maltiez will do in that regard is provide a much needed dopamine hit to a lot of people. I have sympathy for the community managers/moderators and for the Devs, and even for Maltiez in a way. There was a lot of heat and fire all at once all demanding drastic action on a very short time frame and unwilling to accept any hesitation or investigation or delay. Not everything was handled well. Ultimately the stance I'm taking, personally, is to trust Anego to make the right movements going forward even if they don't always take what I consider to be the 'right steps'. And I think they will.
  10. Three days ago I with 'seeking accountability' but this is getting juvenile. I do not miss moderating community forums. I hope you find peace.
  11. Mechanically speaking flowers serve two practical purposes: Dying and bee husbandry. There's also mods that incorporate them into things like herbalism, soap making, alchemy, etc. More than anything, I like them, they're pretty. Ferns, however...
  12. Always wary of the line between realism and tedium, but I do think if seasoned firewood is given an edge in some regard over normal firewood without degrading the role of normal firewood and peat TOO much, it's something that can work. Although if things like sticks were made slightly better as fuel, you might even be able to get over the early game issues that firewood seasoning would cause. I DO think drying out peat would be nice. We would have fewer peat pit fires.
  13. Generally speaking I find elk to be delightfully whimsical, but I am also quite glad to see more mounts being added. I know there are some mods that add carts to the game though I haven't experimented much with them. Generally there are difficulties with physics when it comes to mounts and carts interacting, especially on - as was said above - a blocky world without much in the way of gradient. I'd love to see it tackled, though. The idea of being able to have a proper, nomadic style of play with carts and elk or horses would be quite neat!
  14. Having been the dedicated leather maker a couple times now on servers, I usually find that setting up tannin as early as possible is the best way forward. Don't wait until you have hides to process. The only issue with this is that depending on your start, finding lime can be a bit of a pain. Either way, if you're worried about gathering lime en masse, I find hunting down a desert biome and gathering boulders is easily the fastest way to fill up inventory. Overall, leather is the kind of thing it's best to work on early, and passively rather than when you need it because otherwise you're going to be stuck waiting a bit which is always its own small suffering. Unfortunately not something that's easy to consider the first time you're getting to the point that you need it.
  15. In this case, kind of, yes? Maltiez did not do anything particularly impressive to hide the killcode, from what I understand, it was there for plain reading as soon as people knew where to look and if someone else was reviewing that code before it was released, then it would have been caught. To pretend that Maltiez is going to be slyly pushing malicious code into the base of the game seems to disregard formal publishing processes. On top of that, there is actually a difference between what Maltiez did and publishing malware that, say, steals bank account data or personal details or damages hardware/software by design. What Maltiez did was wrong, absolutely unethical and potentially illegal depending on what actually occurred and how much the fervor has exaggerated or staff have downplayed. It was ego-driven vigilantism, absolutely. I don't think it's ideal to retain Maltiez, I generally agree that they should be sacked if for no other reason than they have shown a significant lack of regard for the community in both actions and words, however this entire greater conversation is starting to feel like temper tantrums with the name slinging and declarations that Vintage Story is now malware. If your trust is so broken that you cannot believe that Anego will be able to handle this, then get your refunds and ward people away by all means. The issue is no longer about Maltiez for you at that point, it's about Anego as a whole and that's fine, that's your right.
