Cross-post from a suggestion for the game below, since it might be doable in a mod if a solution doesn't come to official.
Food spoilage, plant growth and other progression is a problem on dedicated servers where some are online when others aren't.
This guy (daretmavi) in the linked post had a very good suggestion for it, namely letting players claim areas and not letting certain things progress within that area when the owner is not online. This would solve a huge problem for multiplayer where people might not be able to play as often as would be otherwise necessary.
Feature suggestion:
1. A player could claim a certain area within the world. The allowed size customizable by the admin.
2. Everything within this area would somehow be linked to the online/offline status of the claimer, and progression of things such as food spoilage, drying, plant growth, animal starvation would be halted when the claimer goes offline, only to resume when he/she would come back online.
