1.22.0-rc.2 - Fishing, Mechanisms, Metalworking and More!
Silfrenbirce replied to Tyron's topic in News
100% I agree about the rarity of fish being ridiculous in the extreme. I've installed 1.22, but played scores of hours of 1.26 and across every single save file, not one single body of water in any of them ever had more than three fish in total, and that's when they had any fish at all. So far, if anything, 1.22 seems to have increased the rarity. I haven't tried to actually fish with the new mechanics yet. That's been in part because across four different world seeds, none of the bodies of water I've come across have had any fish at all and I wasn't sure if that reflected whether or not fish would be available to catch. (Also, I've always spent the first few days spear-fishing, and the released info about 1.22 would have me believe that's no longer possible. Which, I won't make any bones about it - was an appallingly stupid change). I can understand not wanting fish to be an easy source of protein that disincentivizes players from hunting. But making fish that rare is a very bad way to do it, especially when the default hunger setting drops so quickly. -

Well, to be fair, I think I was being more nitpicky than you were for the purpose of this thread. I will say that I do think early fruit preservation with honey was different enough from much later methods that I personally would hesitate to equate them. And then again maybe I'm being over tedious about it and the differences equate to the different processes of meat curing, I dunno. (I'll also add that part of my tedium probably stems from having recently seen some wildly inaccurate claims about medieval peoples using honey to preserve meat which is ahistorical and also an excellent way to get gullible people sick). -

I stepped off a cliff and fell to my death right after I loaded into my first 1.22 game save. What are you complaining about? -

Fair enough. My grandmother was a farm girl and later a farmwife and I learned early on that jam was jam and preserves were preserves (and not to ever be confused about mincemeat), if I didn't want to be run out of the kitchen. Chalk it up to that. -
Hey man, using s or c means fewer synapses have to fire to connect the dots between numbers and words.

I can believe you made some kind of fruit spread with honey. I and my family have made various things with sugar substitutes. You didn't make jam. Jam is made with sugar. -
Quick tip: just write /gm s or /gm c. No need to write out the entire word.

And some of us find that more than a bit ridiculous. I understand the need to balance realism against game mechanics. But honey is not how you make jam. You make jam with sugar. Honey can be used to preserve fruit, yes. But actual jam as we know it originated with sugarcane, not honey. I hold out hope that as VS develops, we'll see more progression along those lines. -

....They're saying it's weird and stupid for a Gen 3 animal to run from you only to stop if you manage to catch and start milking them. What exactly are you calling an acceptable compromise???? They're saying that an animal that is tame enough to let you milk her should not be running from you in the first place. That said, I also wish the game distinguished between "tame," and "domesticated." Those concepts are not in any way interchangeable. A third generation animal that has been living around humans might still look a good deal like its grandparent forebears, but it's going to be a lot more calm and docile around humans than they were. Honestly, it would be nice if the game distinguished between wild and domestic animals. After a few generations, boars become pigs, wolves become dogs, and so on. -

I do just kinda want to throw out there for the Devs, in the event they happen to care about this kind of thing. Propagate is how you spell the word - not propogate. I know it's a trivial thing, but figured I'd point it out anyway, in case someone wanted to edit some of the text reflected in the handbook information on berry bushes. -
trapping Why is my rabbit trap not working? (NOT basket trap)
Silfrenbirce replied to FairyKairi's topic in Questions
This doesn't make any sense. The idea is exactly the same: using the lure of a vegetable to lure rabbits into a pit trap. If a planted crop would provide free meat and pelts in abundance, than so would a baited reed basket. Why would they nerf the one but not the other? And nerfing it to be less of a meat free-for-all is one thing, but that shouldn't mean that the concept no longer works at all. -
Okay, I know that this is the least important detail ever, but I'm gonna ask anyway. Olives are fruits, and they grow on trees like you would expect a fruit to. This isn't even as controversial as tomatoes - an olive is a fruit - this isn't up for debate. Why on earth did the Devs categorize them as vegetables?

I'm having such a hard time understanding why that would even be implemented. I get that this is a game, and game mechanics have to balance realism against gameplay in order to keep something fun and not tedious. But given how much emphasis is placed on Vintage Story emulating realistic survival strategies...why on earth would the obvious means of spearfishing be replaced with a nonsensical one? Spearfishing in lakes and rivers is not the same as harpooning a whale... -

I sincerely hope the devs aren't actually implementing a new mechanic whereby the only way you can go spearfishing is by throwing spears at fish. Because that is laughably stupid. It is not remotely historical and would ruin the perfectly acceptable mechanic of just spearing a fish as people do in actual real life. I understand the need to balance things, but I can't for the life of me understand why adding fishing poles would necessitate removing spearfishing as a viable way of harvesting fish. I still assume that's what is meant by the statement "Melee attacking a fish makes them escape instantly." Hopefully this will be reconsidered. -

....Oh. No offense but it wasn't at all clear you were referring to the update that isn't even released yet. It sounded as though you were saying that in the current public release, spearfishing is janky and requires you to throw spears to kill fish - and that 1.22 was attempting to fix that. Given that the dev notes are saying that in 1.22 you CAN'T spearfish at all because fish instantly escape when you try, I would have never understood you to be saying that "given the player needs to throw the spear to kill the fish" to be referring to that version. I don't consider it remotely janky to chase fish to kill them. I say that is plenty realistic; if you wade into the water and chase them, of course they're going to run. You can wait by the shore or the shallows and spear a fish as it swims by - that is usually how I catch them. I mean, you saying that it can't be done that way...that's the primary way I've been doing it for the 40ish hours I've played the game so far. The only actual problem is that for some reason there's been about one or two fish per body of water, maximum...when there's been fish at all.
