I was expecting a fun new way to carve out stone and level hills but as they are currently they seem like a waste of time and resources to craft carry and light. Given stone blasting bombs destroy ores and dont drop whole stone blocks i feel like they should at least have a similar blast radius as the ore bombs when used on the appropriate material, certainly more than 2 blocks anyways.

After playing around with them some more they actually blow out a much larger area like you'd expect, but only in ore blocks, so now I'm wondering if they're bugged.

I have to agree, I just got the iron to crush to make these thinking it would make certain activities a lot easier. They are not even worth crafting due to sulfur/iron processing needed to obtain them. Its just about as quick for me to take an iron pick and clear those blocks as to light a bomb and wait.

You need to place them inside the stone. The bomb damage radius is more or less centered on it, I think. If you place it completely inside stone, it destroys about 64 blocks (4x4x4 cube, minues the corners and one or two other blocks).

I concur. The bombs are weak. I am currently digging canals between areas so that I can flood them and pass with my ship. It's tedious even with virtually infinite resources (I'm in year 17) because it takes literally 1 bomb per meter of horizontal progress to get any decent width and depth blasted. The description says "blast radius: 4", it's a lie, it feels like a diameter.

Ah, these kids today, growing up with dynamite and trinitrotoluene and all these other newfangled explosives. Let me tell you, back in the old days before old Alfred wheeled out his special formula boom putty, all we had was black powder, and we were glad to have it let me tell you! Maybe you don't think it's worth it to save a few swings of the pickaxe, but if you was the one swinging that pickaxe I reckon you'd think differently.

Is there a way to edit the configs to increase the blast range?

.\assets\survival\blocktypes\cloth\bomb.json

	"attributes": {
		"blastRadius": 4,
		"injureRadiusByType": {
			"*-scrap": 15,
			"*": 10
		},
		"blastTypeByType": {
			"*-ore": 0,
			"*-stone": 1,
			"*-scrap": 2
		}

Probably, anyway. I have not tried it.
