SolarMoth Posted February 2, 2025 Report Posted February 2, 2025 I'm playing on a heavily modded server with some friends for the 1.20 update and recently I started to get some bad freezes at seemingly random. Checked task manager and saw the game was eating memory and would freeze anytime it would clear garbage in its batches. Troubleshooting on the wiki focuses on gpu based freezing issues and doesn't have anything to help beyond "play on a server" or "buy more RAM" for CPU based freezes, one of the two I'm already doing. I saw another forum post with a similar topic with no real solution beyond to lighten the modlist or the other two offered. Does anyone know of any other avenues that could help? Additional note, I'm running Win10 with 16GB. The stuttering was a bit more tolerable before but after adding rustbound I think I've hit the straw to break the camel's back for my ability to play and enjoy the game.
Thorfinn Posted February 2, 2025 Report Posted February 2, 2025 (edited) Is the server an extra machine, or did you just open your game to MP? You could try various settings on how aggressively memory is managed. Win10 is a hog. Win11 at least lets you shut down the worst of the bloatware while you are playing. I get a lot better performance on a Win7 with 16g than either of 10/11. But, yeah, the more mods, the more code there is to churn through, and the more memory required. 1.20's expanded code was already taxing a 16g system. The best solution would be to take your old i5, add an SSD and bump it to 16g, and make it a dedicated server. Or you could leave that as the server and join on another machine as a client. I've heard good things about switching to Linux Mint, too, but that's pretty drastic. [EDIT] Refurbished i7s are dirt cheap. The big bux are in the GPU, which a server does not need. SolarMoth Posted February 2, 2025 Author Report Posted February 2, 2025 (edited) Server is being hosted on the machine of one of the players so it's external from my vantage. GPU is a fairly new RTX 3060 too so I know that's not it. From talking to the other players who aren't getting this issue, they're running on 32GB systems. Don't think I'll ever "upgrade" to win11 with all the new changes I've heard about but I have been considering making main machine into a linux one for a while. Does make sense that this update caused some performance issues tho 'cause I've never run into this issue on our modded games prior to 1.20 and now I can't go 10 seconds without watching my memory overload and my client freeze while it's taking out the trash. [EDIT] Went to an online store and saw they were selling more 8 sticks for like $30 so I might just go to a 4x8GB system and see if that helps. Edited February 2, 2025 by SolarMoth
