One of the people I follow on other social media is a stonemason. He was just at the cathedral of Notre Dame during maintenance. They had to take the wooden door frame from one of the entrances to get at  the actual wall, and he got photos. What's going on here is, this is a cut stone facade over what he calls "rubble construction" for the actual walls. He's got some interesting technical points to make, but for VS players the message is clear: even the most Serious and Fancy medieval buildings are made of cobble. It's not even good cobble, it's whatever they could dig up.

Go forth, my children, and build impressive stuff out of cobble.

Makes sense. It doesn't matter how ugly or basic the internal part of the structure is if you never see it; it just has to be strong.

I wouldn't even say the concept is limited to medieval buildings. Lots of buildings from the old American West were basically wooden boxes since that was both cheap and efficient construction, but those buildings also invested in fancy false fronts so they would look nicer.

This is the game equivalent of putting packed dirt in the building corners because "It's a cheap block, no one will see it, and it helps the room stay sealed"

. .. a thing I do all the time :P

I playing the mod vs village, where I just find a beautiful fortress made of ugly dirtblocks. I think I going to rebuild it in stones, because I feel more safe behind stonewalls  😅

Reminds me of Asian fortress wall building lol
How it's earthworks encased in stone and it coincidentally ended up being better against cannon fire than the standard european wall before it was modified against it.
BUT I'll definitely take this to heart when I start building my own fortress wall =u=
Gotta finish my house first though, lol
