Darn terf wars!  Looks like the raccoons or foxes (maybe both) were trying to extend their territory.

Would it have helped, if it would have a roof? 🤔

Nope.   Lightning rod does.  If it's placed high enough to cover the area below it.

No matter what? What if you make the roof 2 block thick? or 3 blocks?
...if a lightning hits the surface that has a cave below, do i get hit by the lightning if i am in the cave?
How far down does the lightning go after it hits something? All the way to the mantle? or is there some limit?

Lightning stops at the ground.  It appears (unless this has been fixed) that it will penetrate player placed blocks, such as a roof.  At least from what I've seen on streams and utoobs.

True to some degree, as I've taken damage from lightning strikes inside my building, but not struck directly. Haven't looked at the code to see what it actually does, but there seem to some kind of spherical damage area where the lightning strikes. Anyho, making a lightning rod and placing it high is recommended around your coops and shelters for animals, to prevent such  disasters 😭

Lightning (1.20.8 a while back) demolished my bank of 16 filled chests on the ground floor of a 2 storey building.  All went up in fire. Happy days... 🫤

Lightning rods were installed rapidly afterwards. The burn of hindsight indeed.
