Is it safe to update my single player  1.21.0 world (100+ HOURS) TO 1.21.1    I have about 100 mods and I know they will need to all be updated too. or is it just not worth the bother.

Yes, but . . .

Yes, it should be safe to do the the update. It's going from one stable version to another, and so that is fine.
You can check out the "News" page against the latest release, and people post there if there are issues, and in general there have not been.

Always take a backup anyway - it is good practice.

Now, the "but." The base game should be fine, but mods may be a different story. You can see mods fail to take effect after an update.
Usually it is no big deal, and as soon as the mod writer updates it, then it picks up where it left off and everything is fine.
I wouldn't really anticipate anything major, as it is just going between point releases. Most of them will still work as if nothing has changed. It really depends on the mod though. You could always pick out "likely suspects" and then check the mod page for that mod - there will be a dump of posts if something broke.

True for major release upgrades, but the point-releases are usually bugfixes. Mods generally work unless they were interacting with a vanilla feature that was bugged.

In this case, it's not so much bug fixes I'd be worried about--it's the major changes to certain systems like pottery. I think From Golden Combs had some issues with its ceramic hives while the mod author was updating the mod. Likewise, Fauna of the Stone Age had some issues with crashes, which seem to have been fixed.

So...yeah, mileage will heavily vary when mods are involved. The more one has, the harder it is to update. As @Professor Dragon noted, it's a good idea to make backups regardless, and test your modlist on a separate world to see what works and what doesn't. If certain mods aren't working, you can either wait for them to update, or strip them out of the modlist if possible for the update.

Thanks for your answer.  A few months ago I updated a world from 1.20.12 to 1.21.0 and it was a mess. It wouldn't even load. I really don't want to do that again. Live and learn.
