Items not picking up

I have logged out and logged back in no help. Tried dropping everything in my inventory including clothing still no fix. Was wondering if anyone had a similar issue with the game itself or a mod. currently running version 1.21.4 stable but its not feeling so stable lol

I can't remember the name, but there's a setting that changes item pickup from "automatic" to "crouch only", meaning you only pick items up when crouching. Dig around and check to see if you accidentally enabled that

You've got it right, @Never Jhonsen. It is under Settings, Mouse Controls and is called "Item collect mode".

There are also a few mods that play in this space, to allow pick up with a right click. At least these two - maybe more:

have this problem too, necro'ing this for visibility. 
cant pick up drops, mobs and animals are frozen, i have stable performance otherwise. no lags, low memory usage, vram at 60% at most.

Are you using any mods, and if so, have you tried disabling the mods to ensure that vanilla works properly?

not yet, i was turning off batches of mods to see when the problem disappeared, then i found a workaround yesterday: quit the game completely. the issue doesnt pop up on the first save loaded in a session.

it does! i'm on my first save loaded having just got the game, i go to punch a branchy leaf and the stick refuses to enter my inventory

Thats weird, since it doesnt happen to me anymore. are you quitting the game to desktop every time you leave a save? also, this is exactly how i load a world:

Starting Point: a working Single Player World is loaded, i can pick up items and the Beast AI works. i need to leave the world and load the same world or another world for one reason or another.

1. Hit ESC, then Leave the World.
2. in the Main Menu, Quit to Desktop.
   1. Alternatively to points 1/2, Hit Alt-F4.
3. Start the game again. Load Mods, edit Settings, do whatever.
4. Load a World.
