Ladders?

Hi,
Can someone explain how you climb down ladders without taking fall damage?

You should just be able to crouch your way down, is there something special about your ladders or ladder set up?

Hello, and thanks! No, there's nothing special, I was just trying to build a little cellar in my mud hut. I've found a workaround by making two ladders with a little platform in between so I fall into the second ladder, but I just wanted to know if there's something I just don't understand about how ladders work.

Yeah, if you just press and hold shift(or whichever key you have sneak/crouch bound to), your character should climb down the ladder without issue. If you're falling off the ladder while trying to do so, it's likely because you are pressing the backward movement key while descending(or perhaps pressing one of the side movement keys by accident) which will cause your character to move off the ladder and thus fall.

There is one thing that can crop up. It was still present in 1.20. Have not checked if it's still there.

If you build the ladder in one of the tiles in which you are standing, the ladder itself damages you. Until you leave the AoE of ladders because each inherits your x-z location -- if you are inside one ladder, you are inside the one above and below you if you head those directions. I believe it's actually suffocation damage, though, not fall damage. Though it might have been changed to fall damage in one of the attempts to fix it.

Hey, thanks! The building wasn't the problem, so I have no idea if this played a part in it. I think I was falling forward onto the ground in front of the ladder because the opening is two blocks wide and the ladder seems to take up one block. At least that was my impression.
