Thisted87 Posted December 16, 2025 Report Posted December 16, 2025 (edited) For the past 3 weeks I've been working on a climatically accurate map of Earth, today I've finally polished it to a point that I'm happy with. I made this world with the help of the worldpainter mod created by Hugo Cortell (YangWenLi). Link to the mod is here: https://mods.vintagestory.at/worldpainter#tab-description Please note that I've made this map in Creative mode, so if you'd like to use Survival mode, you'll need to change the game mode. The link to the world download is from my own personal Google Drive account, and includes a comprehensive list of waypoints from which you can start your game. The default spawn area is Brisbane in Australia, my home city. Some things of note: Desert regions are mottled and appear a bit unusual on the overview map (attached below) but are still realistically very dry and very hot. Northern latitudes appear mottled and are unusual beyond about 70 degrees north. National borders are represented by large ground block walls. You can dig through them or fly over them with Creative mode. In Survival, you can treat the country you're in as your maximum territory extent, the choice is yours. I was not able to select which forests should go where in worldpainter, so many forested areas have been hand painted and may not be 100% accurate to their real world environment. The seasonal overview maps below do not indicate *exactly* where snow falls. I made the overview map with a compilation of screenshots of the in-game map, so snow fall happened to be where it was on that particular day. Many trees float one block above ground level if they were placed manually (they still look aesthetically pleasing, but you'll notice close up) Small islands such as the Faroe Islands, the Galapagos Islands, Caribbean islands etc. will likely be too small to build much on. The starting year is year 11. There wasn't anything I could do about this as it took many in game years to build (and I wanted the time to keep running so I could see how seasons changed each region) You'll occasionally find a chunk which is unlit, please type in " /debug chunk relight " if you come across one. The world file size is an enormous 40.7GB. PLEASE don't forget to press "Customize" before starting your game to choose your own day lengths, animal aggression etc. Overview maps: Winter in the north, Summer in the south, and Summer in the north, Winter in the south. Some screenshots I took across the map to showcase it: Link to the world download (as mentioned above, 40.7GB): UPDATE: There has been some issue with Google Drive allowing the download of large files. If the .vcdbs file does not properly download, please download the part 1&2 .rar files. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1CXcUl3NgkTe8XZtwq0StTmkEPqrNUyJg?usp=drive_link Please enjoy playing on the Earth! Zarathustra Posted December 18, 2025 Report Posted December 18, 2025 Awesome mate! You do realize that you did (as far as I know) the first downloadable VS map? And then it is such a banger! Thats an archivement to be proud of! 3

I did not know that this is the first map to be uploaded that surprised me I really hope it meets people's expectations then! Please let me know if there's anything wrong with it - I'm already aware of an issue with the waypoints not showing up for some people... But thank you for your kind words, it's very encouraging and has definitely made my day 1

Since I don't want to build in Siberia, I always have some in sight and they break the immersion, and some minor things like that the topography is veery losely based on reality (Germany is in this map completely flat after the alps and the black forest, which doesn't correspond to reality), but I can live with that, given the scale.
Zarathustra Posted December 19, 2025 Report Posted December 19, 2025 If your Japan map is only half as good as this one, I have a feeling my family won't see me this christmas haha 1

Yes I've heard that the rivers and seas are deep for others.. how many blocks is the difference between the sea level and the land for you? I may have to start working on some fixes... we can think of this as Earth 1.0 Edited December 19, 2025 by Thisted87
Zarathustra Posted December 20, 2025 Report Posted December 20, 2025 Since the scale of this map is roughly 1 block = 1 kilometer, most rivers shouldnt be deeper than 1, maybe for gameplay purposes 2 blocks, and the sea should maybe be more like 10-20 blocks maximum. But most important is I think that the changes are more gradual

Every mountain and every hill was hand painted, and so there will always be some sacrifice somewhere... If it was possible to make the map larger (which it isn't, due to the worldpainter mod limits) it would be much easier to make the landscape more spread out. But I did the best with what I could. Rivers and oceans can be easily fixed though, as well as removing "border walls", if they're not wanted. Actually, I wanted to make border marks on the ground, but again it is a limitation of the worldpainter mod, as individual block types cannot be placed. The game simply renders every block as grass, so the only way to represent nations was to build upwards.

For me personally, I don't like the Idea of having the nations marked, because this is just not the way it is in reality. And with the rivers it just feels odd to fall into a small river and suddenly be at the bottom of the marianas trench haha

The rivers and oceans will require an entire re-work, but I've started some tests already tonight to make the rivers and oceans with proper topography. It should be okay but I'll have to paint all the trees etc. again so it might be a while before a new map is ready. This coming week is busy with Christmas etc

Yawnyk9 Posted December 24, 2025 Report Posted December 24, 2025 (edited) This seems very impressive, I started playing recently and used to play on a minecraft earth map and googled to see if anyone did that on Vintage story. Low and behold you've done it very recently, so that was cool to see lol. I'm quite curious to actually explore the map but at the moment I don't really see how I could practically do it. The waypoints/map as you've mentioned don't seem to work for some as you've said earlier, I can see on the wiki https://wiki.vintagestory.at/Special:MyLanguage/Worldmap , it says there are Maps in the VintagestoryData/Maps. I assume they correspond to the saves based off the dates of the files I have. So maybe we'd need a corresponding map file from you to actually see the map and the waypoints? Also again not experienced in how this all works but you say that the map is 30k x 60k, is that the loaded sections of the map? Cause I do see in the settings1024000x256x1024000, I am guessing that's how far you can theoretically go like in the normal game but you've personally developed the 30k x 60k, figured I'd ask just as a bit of personal curiosity. 40 gig would probably be around 30k x 60k so I'm fairly sure I already know, based off the fact a Minecraft earth map I have of similar size takes up around the same amount of storage . But would just like to confirm. Another question I had was you said it took years to build in game, I assumed if you were using world painter, what did you have to do in game to help make the world? Any questions you can answer it appreciate I am genuinely interested in this, thanks. Also hope you have a Merry Christmas lol. Also one last question lol, is it possible to make an Earth map with the edges cut off so you don't accidentally generate new terrain? Edited December 24, 2025 by Yawnyk9

Any questions you can answer it appreciate I am genuinely interested in this, thanks. Also hope you have a Merry Christmas lol. Also one last question lol, is it possible to make an Earth map with the edges cut off so you don't accidentally generate new terrain? Hello! Thanks for the interest and your questions. I'll do my best to answer them how I can. I'm very new to Vintage Story myself, so I'm unsure how the game files and mechanics work exactly. The map is a world save file, so it should *theoretically* come with all the information required, but it seems that there is indeed some missing data, like waypoints. I'm still trying to understand this and work out how to get this to work, but can't yet understand which files contain waypoint data explicitly. The map uploaded is basically as you identified, just the part that is uncovered which is 30K x 60K. The reason why it says 1 million x 1 million odd blocks is because of the worldpainter mod limitations. If you select any other dimensions than the standard 1 million by 1 million, the world will fail to render. The map took 10 odd in-game years to build because I hand painted every mountain and landscape individually, along with about half of the trees. This was not an easy or quick task. I usually use grayscale heightmaps but it was simply too much data and QGIS slowed to an unusable crawl when I tried to render this. It won't be possible to make the world map with edges just yet, due to the mod limitations I mentioned before. Have a festive holiday season, and Merry Christmas - Jason
YunaVerse Posted Thursday at 11:27 PM Report Posted Thursday at 11:27 PM you have saved my life...i dont even spend my time actually playing, im so tired of just hopping on the game and constantly loading worlds and deleting and messing around with worldgen mods, configs, and settings trying to get something decently realistic and wide, for example a long flat plain or realistic spread out mountains. not choppy up and down random hills or scattered ponds that look like someone scratched the earth multiple times. THANK YOU 100 TIMES FOR THIS MAP!

I'm still working on better updates and stuff, so hopefully Earth 2.0 will bring you an even better experience 1
YunaVerse Posted Friday at 04:15 AM Report Posted Friday at 04:15 AM (edited) i have an idea if you're unable to figure out how to get the waypoints to work, tp to each wp and write down the cords for each in the note(waypoints.txt) and reupload the new note file. we would be able to manually apply the waypoints but thats incase you cant figure it out. best of luck with EARTH2.0!
