  1. baskets don't burn but expensive chests do?
  2. In general, some sounds are good (weather is great!) and others are missing or darn near silent.
  • monsters barely make any sound to hear them coming
  • spear chuckers or whatever they're called... too OP. They hide in the tree foliage and nail you for way too much damage and like I mentioned above, almost silent!

[can't figure out how to format this, sorry]

default game settings are insanely too hard and discouraging for players coming from minecraft. I know several people who are turned off by the hyper realism. I like it but think about toning down the default settings for people who just want to jump in and try it. Advanced players who like the difficulty, can have the MASOCHISTIC difficulty option. :)

Container UI - I play on a 3440x1440 monitor and all the containers open attached to the right side of the screen, that's a lot of distance for my mouse! Why not just 100 pixels right of center as default and UNLOCKED by default PLEASE.

I like the game and I know it's not finished... so I'm just hoping some of these ideas can be implemented. Balanced sounds and louder enemies and UI for containers are biggest gripe :)

Welcome to VS! Tips for the bowtorn (spear chuckers), they have a loading animation and sound about 2-3 seconds before they fire, that's usually all the early warning you're going to get. They are relatively easy to deal with once you get a bit of experience. They always hit precisely where you were when the missile is fired and will always run away if you get too close and engage in melee, they do have a melee attack but it's very weak. Just strafe and charge or briefly leave the area and allow them to despawn.

thanks for the reply. ive actually been trying to dodge but they seem too accurate. I usually try to get behind a tree or wall and yes i can hear their weird breathing sound before they launch but BARELY. Walking sounds, grunting or something a bit louder would be nice. Just saying. Think old Doom games. Remember all the weird noises mobs would make when you got near?

Welcome to the forums and the game!

Baskets should burn. I recall having some next to a pit kiln once and having them catch fire. If they aren't burning for some reason then it sounds like a bug that needs reporting on Github.

Sound is one of those things that's still being worked on. Footsteps have been added for bears and wolves in 1.22, so it's a start.

One mistake that many players make is looking at the voxel graphics and assuming that Vintage Story is Minecraft but with more realistic graphics. And it's very much not. Vintage Story is its own game, and a very difficult one at that; the challenge is why many players prefer it to the other block game, so I don't think it's a good idea to make the default experience easier.

I will note that there are already several options at the player's disposal to make the game easier or harder, as well as good presets for just jumping in and playing. New players who struggle with Standard may find Exploration difficulty more enjoyable to play, since it tones down many challenges and is more forgiving. Wilderness Survival is a good preset for those who don't find Standard challenging enough, but it's a game mode that is more recommended for advanced players due to its unforgiving nature. Homo Sapiens is similar to Wilderness Survival in that regard, but without any lore content.

Bowtorn are easily countered by a bit of armor, a shield, or even just running at angles or ducking behind trees. They aren't terribly good at shooting moving targets unless the target is running straight at them. Likewise, they also aren't very good at making sure they have a clear shot at a target, so they will happily sit there and fire into a wall/fence/branchy leaf block just so long as they can "see" the target. They won't move to have a clear line of fire. As for dodging, do keep in mind that they emit a loud screech right before they fire a shot, so that gives you some time to hide behind an obstacle or otherwise get out of the way of the incoming shot.

They also don't like to fight in melee, so while they will try to smack you if you get right up next to them, most of their efforts will be devoted to running away.

Ooh, a shield? Can I make one early game? I guess that's my fault for not even thinking about it. I appreciate the comments. I will keep at it. The game world is gorgeous. There is a lot of love going into it.

Crude shield, 3 or maybe 6 reeds sandwiched bewteen 6 sticks.

However the crude shield is not enough to prevent damage 100% from bowtorn, though my memory might be awful.

I don't know that it will stop 100% of incoming damage, but it should mitigate enough to make dealing with them easier. It's not something the player will want to have equipped all the time due to the 20% hunger penalty that holding items in the offhand incurs, but it's not a bad option for early defense.

Hunger penalty? *long sad face* Plus lack of light while holding shield...when dungeon delving... But I guess I can swap back and forth, so not that big of a deal I guess.

It's not as bad as it sounds. It just means you might want to only equip it in situations that feel threatening, or you're otherwise expecting to get into a fight. That way you don't burn through as much food, or otherwise have your offhand slot free for holding a lantern.

For cave exploration, I prefer a lantern myself, but it's not a bad idea to bring a stack of torches(or oil lamps, if you want to craft them) and place them as you explore. That way you'll have some light while still being able to have your shield equipped.
