They already are in the game. You can find shed antlers around the late winter/early spring time frame.

I have never seen one.  But then, I'm new, and I have never even reached winter yet.  Should the game start a little earlier, then, so that there are sheds around?

Honestly, a really slow stone-age pickaxe would be nice peace of mind for early caving. I like to rush caves very early on to try my luck, but if you forget to pack enough blocks, you're in a bit of a tricky situation. You can either hope there are enough loose stones and boulders around the cave to make enough drystone fences to pillar out, or starve to death since there is no way to claw your way up onto a 2-tall ledge.
It's a fringe use sure, but it'd still be useful in the kinds of situations where a player is semi-softlocked due to being trapped by blocks of rock. 😆

Sounds like yet another great argument for letting us mantle up 2 blocks with a jump, as I have advocated elsewhere.  (I think that StepUp should be in vanilla as a switch, for 1 block movement.)   It would really help with mountaineering, too.  My daughter wants to climb some of those huge massifs but she just can't, not without breaking blocks.

I did indeed forget that firewood is required for a firepit. This is a flaw and should be remedied - peat, a pile of sticks, the base of a healthy tree, and many more options should be fine ways to start a firepit.

I have to agree.  We should maybe only need sticks to make a firepit.  (Can sticks be used as fuel?  They should.)  And we should probably be able to gather grass by hand, too, although much more slowly.  Toolmaking does pre-date the controlled use of fire historically, but we aren't talking about history, here.  This is a survival situation, and you sure as hell can make a fire without an axe and a knife!

The antler sheds tend to happen while there is still snow on the ground, and will despawn after a time since they're a dropped item. They're somewhat rare to find at the moment and the player basically has to deliberately checking the areas that male deer inhabit around the end of winter in order to have the best chance of even finding the sheds. If the player wants antlers, the most reliable way to get them is hunting.

As for starting the game earlier, I do think it would be nice to have an option of changing the start date, but the default start date itself shouldn't be set earlier since that will probably cause even more issues, at least in the current state of the game. Consider that the earlier the start date, the more the player will need to worry about freezing and starving to death, since the weather is cold and wild foods are still dormant, and given recent balancing animals may not be spawning in the winter either.

I'd add this idea to the list of things that would make for a neat mod, but I don't think should be vanilla.

The whole point of the first pickaxe being copper is that you have to work for it, and it feels special when you finally get everything put together and can mine in earnest.

That's really the first big moment in the game where you put in a bunch of effort and get a big payoff. Similar to the anvil/saw as well.

I've restarted dozens, if not hundreds, of times across thousands of hours, and that first pick and hammer still feels special, even now.

I don't think taking away from that experience would improve the game.
