Zx573 Posted May 20 Report Posted May 20 While this may be a disproportionate change for the specific use case, I think it would be cool to introduce wire drawing as a mechanic for making chain mail. It would mean adding two forgeable items, a rod and a drawplate. Players would forge the rod and then heat it back up to pull it through the draw plate multiple times with tongs equipped in the off hand to create the wire. Then the wire could be wrapped around another rod to form a coil and cut to make chainmail rings. It may be a bit much to add just for chainmail, but it would feel a lot better for creating chainmail than the existing chain forging. Other uses of the system could be making lead wire to use as a crafting material for windows, and potentially using wire as a replacement for rope in some crafting recipes. 4 1
Heegrim Posted May 20 Report Posted May 20 I agree that there should be something more to chainmail crafting than just banging out a plate and punching holes in it. 1

Jonas tech would have some good uses for wire as well, because you just know that stuff is full of it. Jewelry would be another great use, since many pieces often require delicate wire in their construction. 1

cjameshuff Posted May 21 Report Posted May 21 Solder, too. (And as an aside, it would make a lot more sense to hammer the ingot into rods than to saw it. Or cast it in a wooden form. Or melt it with an oil lamp and dribble it into a line.) Steel wire can be wound into springs (which is basically the first step in forming rings for chainmail). Springs could be used for...firearms? Self closing doors?
Facethief Posted May 21 Report Posted May 21 I’m pretty sure that there is already a wire draw plate as a decoration in one of the story locations.
