I'm such a baby about things, but I love horror so much. This is great.

Depends on how you want to look at it. The "higher power" could be some eldritch Cthulu thing bent on malevolence, creeping into the world. Or it could be some benevolent higher being holding everything together and bringing you, the player, to locations like these so that the evil trying to creep into the world can be defeated. At face value though, it's a clever plot device to keep the player from breaking things and bypassing puzzles.
