Jubal Posted July 18 Report Posted July 18 Okay, I'm at lateishgame (still not got steel or got much into baking, but eg done both the story chapters). A few questions! Washing out pots where the food rotted. From the ingame text, I'd thought what you needed to do was just leave them in water for a while, but ground storing them in a water block never seems to clean them. What's the actual mechanic? Can you take an elk through a teleporter, either by riding in on the elk or alternatively by going through the teleporter and then whistling the elk? I assume the answer is no, but this does rather dramatically reduce the utility of teleport devices if you can't travel at a decent speed at the other end. Finding gold and silver (guess what, someone needs to make electrum plates) - do gold and silver appear properly on the area search of prospecting picks, or should I just dig tons of quartz veins wherever I find them and hope I stumble across some? Throw the pot into water. It works for all other containers as well, and will also get rid of meals, although seemingly not liquids. You can teleport with an elk starting from 1.22, provided that you are sitting on it. It works for all teleporters as well as the /tp command. Prior to that, people had been pushing the elk into the translocator before going through it themselves. Gold and silver do occasionally appear on density search, but it's less reliable than for other ores - prospecting in the same spot produces different readings depending on how much quartz (or galena for silver, but quartz is much more reliable) happens to be generated in the dummy chunk. If you find a reading for gold or silver, it effectively means "if there is quartz in this area, there is a high chance for gold/silver" - but if there's no quartz, then that reading is meaningless. Similarly, areas rich in gold or silver sometimes don't return any readings for them. I don't generally recommend digging through quartz veins before you know that you've seen some ore in the area, though it can be worthwhile to try if you have no other option (and, as mentioned by @DarkGold below, it can be worthwhile to also use node search - probing just a couple times will easily tell you if a quartz deposit is worth mining). I've still not set out on my chapter 2 journey, between breaks from the game and adventures searching for pentlandite and cinnabar (both finally discovered this week). Finding gold is now at the top of my to do list too. I had the same question about the elk and teleporting: The answers I received were very helpful. I also read somewhere (I forget where) that using the 2nd mode of the prospecting pick (checking the immediate radius) on quartz veins you find (especially on or near the surface, since you don't have to dig to find the vein first) can be helpful for finding gold and silver. Edit: So far I've only found silver by luck; I happened to see silver bits on the surface (like how one might see copper bits on the surface) amongst an area of quartz bits. It's only happened to me once, so I can't recommend it as a reliable strategy, but maybe also keep an eye out for areas with quartz bits on the surface and see if there is anything else mixed in amongst them? In my experience, this method tends to be pretty reliable for checking quartz veins. This is a way to find silver and gold, but in my experience it's not particularly reliable. Silver and gold deposits are a very small part of the quartz vein, so the chances of one generating a bit of surface ore is very small indeed. It can also be easy to mistake them for quartz bits when they do generate. 1

The silver bit was definitely hard to distinguish from the quartz bits. I figured gold (being a more distinct color) might be a little easier to spot though. Nonetheless, I certainly pay a lot more attention to the quartz bits I see on the surface now, since finding silver on the surface.
