Ok, so here's the deal...

I played for several hundred hours in my first world with default world generation settings.
I found a really cool island in the middle of a big lake and I built my base on it.
I was excited about building a sailboat... but then I realized it was going to be pretty worthless in a world with no oceans.

So, I copied my entire island with world editor, created a new world with oceans, then pasted my island into an ocean in the new world.
So now I got to keep my awesome island base AND also have a world with oceans to explore with my fancy new sailboat!
There's just one problem... No wild animals spawn on my island anymore. My island was a forest biome, so I would get wolves, moose, bighorn sheep, the occasional bear, etc.
(Also, rifts never spawn on my island anymore either... but this doesn't really bother me.)
I miss the wild animals though.

I'm assuming this is because I pasted my island into an "ocean biome" so none of the forest animals will spawn anymore.
So finally to the question... Does anyone know a way to reclassify my island as a forest biome so that wild animals will once again spawn on it?

And here are a few vanity shots of my fancy island for fun. 😬

Vintage Story doesn't have "biomes" the way Minecraft does - which makes things even more complicated. It just tracks several climate maps that determine things like
- Forest level of a given area
- Humidity/Rain probability of a given area
- Temperature range of a given area

These stats combined define what spawns in terms of trees, crops and animals. The rest is the height map and terrain pass during world gen determining where mountains go, if you get lush green or a gravel/sand desert in your forest, then ores and resources.

If anything exists, the world edit suite (enabled using ".we" in chat) could maybe help you edit, well, the world? Other than that there is alot of semi-independent value that would need to be carefully adjusted and you'd likely have to write a mod that allows you to specifically override the climate maps for a given chunk via command.

I know that the Biomes don't function the same in VS as the do in Minecraft. I'm using that term as shorthand to explain my problem in a succinct manner.

I'll stick some screenshots in the next post to try to illustrate better what the situation is.
As it stands, I've copied and pasted my island (which used to spawn forest animals and rifts) into an ocean in a new world, and now it no longer spawns any animals (or rifts). The biome of the (very) nearby shoreline is a forest which is spawning wolves, and bears, etc. So it would seem that the temperature/rainfall are appropriate for these creatures to spawn. And my island has trees, rainfall and all the other common elements of a forest biome that normally spawn those creatures.

It feels like the game just isn't recognizing my island as an appropriate place to spawn any animals (or rifts... which is weird because I'm pretty sure rifts sometimes spawn in the water). It would help to understand better what exactly the spawning mechanic is I suppose. Is it set during initial world gen, and therefore doesn't recognize the change of adding an island as a suitable place to spawn forest creatures? IE, the game still thinks my island is an ocean.
Or, is the spawning mechanic updated continuously to account for changes to the map? And for some reason it's not updating to recognize that my island is there (and is a viable place to spawn forest creatures).

I've looked through all of the World Edit functions, and can't see anything that pertains to updating a particular location's spawning characteristics.

only solution to your case is mods unfortunately. because vs sees that area as a sea, and knows that land shouldnt be there (unless you placed blocks by hand), it wouldnt recognize the land placed with worldedit.

other than mods, you can drive the animals to the island you got with the use of bridges, and fences to keep the animals contained while you drive them down an animal run into your island.

Do you have any idea which mod might be able to do that?
I already have a lot of domesticated critters on my farm... It would just be nice to have it back to "natural" where the critters spawned on their own.
It was exciting to have to deal with the occasional bear, or wolf wandering through... And the moose were pretty funny too.
