Alyster Vain Posted October 7 Report Posted October 7 Pretty much what the title says. Maybe Hammer + Chisel + chiseled block + source block in the crafting grid = two chiseled blocks? I would just really like to see a way to copy complex chisel designs that you want to use frequently, rather than having to make each one from scratch. 5
Rainbow Fresh Posted October 8 Report Posted October 8 I, too, would like a way to copy existing designs but I also do think that it is fair enough reasoning for the game to not have it and leave it to mods. Chiseling is hard and repetitive work and bringing in the dreaded "realism" argument, people back then surely did not have precision machines that could mass-produce things. Giving builds and ornaments that were hand-crafted like that a real value and status. Which plays nicely into Multiplayer. So I'd rather leave that option to mods, of which there exist a few - and I would personally recommend ChiselWiz because it's the most "fair" in my opinion, allowing you to copy a design while still taking (less) time per block and taking the full durability of the chisel as it's a mere client mod that automatically sends the commands for each chisel operation needed to recreate your design to the server in quick succession; effectively auto-chiseling based on an existing design. 2
Demoncyborg Posted October 8 Report Posted October 8 personally a huge fan of QP's chisel tools, i think just the pantograph and hand planer would fit really well into vanilla. the pantograph does feel like it has an insane amount of durability for casual builders, just being a copy-paste shape tool, but it's well-balanced for huge projects imo. the hand planar is just a quality of life that i'd die for (shave off one layer of voxels at a time). those two tools just have the same specific feel as some other vanilla ones to me, like the crowbar 1

If you're open to modding and want similar functionality in the meantime, alongside the already-mentioned QP's Chisel Tools (largest and most popular, potentially risky to remove from a world once used) or Chisel Wiz (client-side, rich chisel mode selection), you can also consider Chisel Tools Lite which is a much lighter alternative. 4 hours ago, Rainbow Fresh said: I, too, would like a way to copy existing designs but I also do think that it is fair enough reasoning for the game to not have it and leave it to mods. Generally agreed, though I will say it's a shame in some capacity that the vanilla chiseling is currently so simplistic. At least one or two tools like the hand planer and hand wedge from Chisel Tools Lite would be amazing to have, even if not easy copy-paste, as they would make the repetitive work much more enjoyable. I've also seen ideas for a blueprint of sorts which would create a preview of the desired shape - still need to chisel it by hand, but without having to constantly double-check complex works for any errors. 3
Mac Mcleod Posted October 9 Report Posted October 9 There are mods that do this. And there are chisel artists on the old TOPS who were upset that their work was copied without their permission. At the least, such a system needs to block copying of blocks that are reinforced or inside a claim where you lack permissions.
Mac Mcleod Posted October 9 Report Posted October 9 I think the absolute art level of the game would increase and that would drive cool videos on Youtube which would drive more customers. Making the same castle wall corner piece with 35 clicks 80 times pretty much prevents people from chiseling so a lot more people would be interested in chiseling if they could make the corner piece once and then copy it 80 times. However, folks should be aware that past a certain points chiseling absolutely destroys performance. There was a highly chiseled town on the old TOPS that was notorious for having terrible frame rates when you were in it. It also creates a lot of server->client custom messages with a lot of data so it's probably hard on the server and hard on the bandwidth. Just FYI. 1
