Identifying rapids

Hello folks, I'm new to 1.22 (I hung around a while longer in a prior version waiting for some mods to update).

I've found a very noisy little waterfall, but I can't tell if it's technically (for waterwheel purposes) rapids. It seems to have a sort of frosting on the surface of the water near the upper edge blocks, a big spray of water particles where it cascades, and is very, very noisy, but I've never seen a waterfall like this in VS before so I don't know if it's just 'this much water falling this far is noisy.'

Can someone advise me before I begin setting up an entire base only to discover that water power won't work?

Thanks!

A moment after taking the above I noticed the aged planks in the ground (thanks, tunnel vision!), which led to a small collapsed chest with a falx in it, so this entire terrain structure may be part of some mod. I've got a couple of mods which add ruins.

Of course that still doesn't tell me if I'm looking at rapids or not.

This looks more like a product of the Watersheds mod, which adds noisy little waterfalls and rivulets of its own. I'm not sure if they're powerful enough to qualify as a source of water power though.

In the vanilla game, rapids will generate in the same general fashion as surface streams/waterfalls. They are, however, shorter and much, MUCH louder, in addition to having a sort of "rushing water" overlay and generating a lot more particles.

Thank you both. I'd just hate to go through all the necessary shenanigans to move camp if it turned out I wasn't actually in a location I could play with water wheels.

Looks a bit like a Watersheds feature if you ask me, and the collapsed chest may just be regular buried treasure.

Either way, I will note that, while the other methods are fine, if you want to be absolutely certain whether you're looking at rapids, you can also:

  • Build a flat platform for the water to flow onto, or redirect the water onto flat terrain - if the water spreads out, it's normal water, since rapids can't split (this method may be impractical for your large waterfall thing).
  • Check the block code in creative mode: /gm 2, enable World Edit menu with the ` key, enable "liquid blocks selectable" in the top right menu, and look at the water block - if the code in block info at the top of the screen says something with "rapid", then it's absolutely a rapid.

There's always the option of just spawning in some rapids via creative. It's not quite the same thing as finding one, of course, but it does mean you don't have to move camp. It's also easily passed off as diverting part of the waterfall to power your machinery, so it's not quite as cheaty as say, plunking down rapids in the middle of a flat desert, where there couldn't plausibly be any.

I absolutely forgot you can do this.
