Hi,

I was wondering what does the house icon in the HUD do? is there a benefit of having that?

Because I have an open stair to the basement area (obviously my food storage is further up and closed) but if I leave it open I dont get the house icon. I dont even know why because it's all doors and granite rock. And if I close it with trapdoors I get the house icon and the storage below but it kinda blocks me coming up the stairs AND it's ugly ....

The house icon simply means the space you're currently in counts as an insulated room. That's why it appears when you close off the stairwell but disappears if you leave the stairwell open(ie, no doors/trapdoors at all).

The benefit of having an insulated room is that you won't get cold while in that space, and will in fact slowly warm up. The spoilage rates will also be a bit better, though not as good as a cellar.

Do keep in mind though that there are certain requirements that must be met for a space to count as a proper room: https://wiki.vintagestory.at/Room

why does granite stone not insulate? or could it be the max size?

Granite and other stone types are an insulating material. If the room exceeds a max size it will no longer count as a room. The interior dimensions can be no greater than 14x14x14 which is 2744 cubic meters of space. I think the dimensions can be a bit different as long as the total volume doesn't exceed the 2744 magic number.
