Can you claim land from npc's?

So I straight up stabbed a merchant in hopes that I could claim his home and whatever goodies he had. Is it possible to take over his claim or did I just kill him for no reason?

I suspect you already know that killing merchants and players doesn't get rid of their claimed areas.
