Netskimmer
I am following the recipe shown in the handbook, but it's not working. Has the recipe changed?
Torondor the Builder
What size pelt are you using? My issue was that I had made several small pelts with the intent of making hunter backpacks, and found that small pelts could not be used for that. Only medium or above. redram
Yes you want to watch hide-based recipes (and really all recipes) closely to make sure they're not size or material limited. I believe the recipe for small pelts is going to be removed though, since nothing can be made from them.
Netskimmer
I figured out the problem. I had the size right, but was using hides, not pelts. Now I have to find borax...
Danston Phoenix
craft it with fat to cure it then you can make the the hunter backpacks
Netskimmer
I guess borax is for the higher levels of tanning?
Torondor the Builder
Borax and lime are for making leather proper from hides. Pelts are basically time cured “oiled” hides using animal fat.
Netskimmer
I see, is there anything special you need to do or a special place you need to leave them so they will cure?
Torondor the Builder
The hides Into pelts? No. Just place an animal fat over a hide in your crafting area and it will provide you with an oiled hide I believe. Then you can put it anywhere (or keep it on you) and it will cure over time (it will show you the progression as it does). I placed mine into baskets and left them be while I did other things. (The process to make actual leather pieces is far more complex, being a 4 step process involving 3 barrels and several different processes.) Netskimmer
OK, thank you for the information. I'll need to secure a larger source of copper before working on leather.
