AngryRob
Currently i am finding placing some blocks to be frustrating. You have to be looking at the spot just right to get the stairs or slabs to face the direction you want. I would like to see a better block rotation system, similar to 7 days to die where you hold down the r button and select the block face that you would want.
Hastsezini
There's a mod that most of us use, link below. This gives you a preview of your block placement prior to placing it. Also with a ton of other cool features, highly recommend.

For slabs, you can put them in your grid, and get out a 'horizontal only' version. And then you can put that in the grid and get a 'vertical only' version. And then put that in and get the normal mode again. Helps if you need to place a lot of one orientation.
Allen
The horizontal only version works great, but I personally found 'vertical only' to be a lot less great as when I try to use that mode, I keep on placing the slab at right angles to the direction I want to place for some reason. zachary kenyon
horizontal fixes two directions, whereas vertical only fixes one. so it makes sense that vertical blocks are less constrained, given that.
