Finding stones for knapping

How do I find stones for knapping stone tools? I can only find soft stones like claystone on the overworld but I can't find any granite or other stones to use for knapping. I've tried venturing out more and even going into caves to find loose stones to pick up and use for knapping, but I can't find any.

Check out those claystones on the surface anyway. Some of them will have an off-color second stone with them. Mousing over them will list the name as "loose flint". (If your block info window isn't up, I think B or something toggles it.)

Picking those up gives you flint, which is the second best stone to use for stone tools. They generate anywhere, next to any other stone type. Something like 10%-20% of stones will have flint instead. Once you know what to look for, you'll have no trouble getting tons.

In areas of soft stone (sedimentary) top layer, you may also occasionally see flint in stone in cliffs and caves.  You can mine these flint blocks with just your bare hands, to get the flint out of them.
