I think tracing mechanics would fit perfectly with this game. 

Imagine this: Depending on the terrain, wet soil/sand/gravel/snow would leave paw/foot prints behind for a brief while. If an animal or player is wounded, they could also leave a trail of blood. Maybe even have broken foliage if a large animal runs through a bush?

How the game is currently, it's very easy to loose track of animals when chasing them. I feel like implementing this would add another layer of immersion if done correctly.
