RobinHood
Is it worth exploring a cave even if the geologist's prospecting-pickaxe shows little or no ore deposits? I have just sealed 3 large cave entrances with soil so that I can't fall in, its extremely deep also and no drifters can now run out. And I did delete the cave symbol on the map. Stroam
You could find an underground ruin and the cave can stretch for a very long distance but I don't.

Even if prospecting doesn't show nearby ore depots, natural caves can become handy for mining later. For instance, you can find natural shafts going down 100+ blocks.
