How long after being scared will it take before hens brood again?
Echo Weaver replied to Echo Weaver's topic in Questions
Um, this may be a stupid question.... but do you need to feed the chickens while they brood? You only need to feed other lifestock to get them to breed, so we haven't been feeding them while we wait for the chicks. I'll feel a bit like a dork if that's the problem. THANK YOU for the cheat. -
We have some gen 1 chickens in our game, and we've been trying to breed them all game year. They have a pen far enough away from the main base that we don't pass by on a regular basis, but every few days (it's hard to know how many), we accidentally go to close while looking for resources, and they get spooked. We haven't been able to incubate any eggs to hatching. The pen currently has 2 eggs with 2 days left and 3 with 5 days left, with the warning that they need a broody hen. I don't recall it being nearly this difficult to breed them the first time. That was at another base, but if anything the pen was closer to the house -- close enough that the chickens (which have laser vision and can see through walls) would get spooked occasionally but not regularly. I'm at the point of wanting to cheat something, but I don't know if there's an admin command that would allow me to generate a couple of gen 2 chickens.

Are you keeping them far from your base? I wonder if this is a chunk loading issue. We've established that livestock pregnancies don't progress if you are too far from them.

Smoke from fire pits and forges, pipes and ventalation

I hope that's a bug, honestly. There's something therapeutic about going after rabbits in VS when I can't get them out of my garden IRL. I still fence mine and pretend it matters. I would love to build a big beautiful base, but in addition to not really having the patience, I'm crap at architecture. My current base was created by reconstructing a big church ruin and extending the tower remnant high enough for a windmill. I'm pretty proud of it.- 74 replies

Now I want to know how Hardcore Water did it. We're headed to steam power, aren't we? Sounds like you could get a chance to lay some track for a steam engine.- 74 replies

Dang. I saw that name whiz by when I was in my Minecraft phase, but I never looked into it. Reading up on the features, yeah -- clearly the inspiration for at least the early versions of the game. Tyron was right in seeing that it's a totally different game so it shouldn't stacked on top of MC.- 74 replies

Well, I wasn't offended by a wanking sim, just the idea that a wanking sim would be a sim game but not VS's survival stuff. I was protective of VS's honor. And you didn't come up with bad enough because the poop mod exists. But please don't try harder . (You do know there's a cannibalism mod, don't you?) (Also, I'm pretty sure somebody somewhere wrote a wanking sim, and I don't want to find it.) The fun part was figuring out how to implement it, not actually playing with it. How much did you code?? And here I was squinting at recipe JSON for days, trying to figure wtf it was doing with the shapes and textures in the meal bowl. OMG. Hmmm. We could accurately reduce the game to ones and zeros swimming by, but I don't think it passes the fun test.- 74 replies

ANYWAY The closest I have gotten to a dating sim is reading reviews of Date Everything. They made me quite sure that I never want to play it, but I do want to read more reviews of the game. They're hilarious. Tyron's original MC mod was about collecting butterflies, wasn't it? That exists in VS too, but I've never been interested in collecting them. I just like watching the butterflies flying around. I hadn't been thinking about anything so extreme, but it's entertaining to think about. Performance-wise, I don't know that it would have to be much different from the freezing mechanic, would it? I suppose it depends on how closely one is trying to simulate (lack of) airflow. Like water transport, that could get infinitely complex and resource-intensive.- 74 replies

On the actual subject of ventilation, we seem to be pretty well aligned. There actually is a poop mod (the best part is the name) for VS AND a separate pee one by the same modder, so it's not at all unrealistic. I have no intention of playing with them. But what I was actually saying was that all simulations (or realistic game mechanics or whatever) stop when it doesn't make sense. Which is exactly what I was trying to say. Except for the performant part. I figure that's for other people to figure out.- 74 replies

I'm not lastingly upset, but yeah I did get annoyed. I don't see how ventilation is so different from chains of aquifers with water flow by gravity, but I said "simulation" and the conversation derailed (here). If we're going to talk about being dramatic, how did that word jump us from chimneys to wanking? I was fascinated by the mechanics in the water transport thread as a hypothetical, but when the chips are down, managing air quality in my base sounds fun to me and building extensive structures to transport water does not. I like playing VS in part because it feels real. So, whatever fits "feels real" is good. I get that it's subjective.- 74 replies

OK, ha, this is a terminology issue. I didn't realize that "playstyle" is a technical term referring to the game config. I think of playstyle as an abstract way that one chooses to play a sandbox game. That might be the game settings, might be mods, might be guidelines that exist only in your head, and is probably a combination. For example, one game I'm considering is a vegetarian one -- no consuming meat or killing animals for anything except self-defense. It would make protein very challenging, and without access to leather, I'd probably need to mod the recipes for metal armor to be built on gambeson instead of leather jerkin. I'd consider that a "style." Also, focusing on sneaking around rather than open combat is a style. Also considering a run through where I cap or severely limit access to metal and stick around in the stone and pottery age for a long time. So, in that sense, a modlist is an integral part, but it probably needs another word. Yeah, this seems like a lovely way to implement it.

Smoke from fire pits and forges, pipes and ventalation
Echo Weaver replied to argeshnex456's topic in Suggestions
Realistic survival mechanics is totally one of the purposes of the game. Realistic survival mechanics are simulation. I think you guys have a very narrow view of what a simulation game is, mostly defined by not being what you're playing. Most simulation games are simulating within a certain context and with certain goals. All simulations, game or not, simplify what they're simulating, and what they choose to simplify feeds into what they're trying to accomplish wrt to style and story. Lots of survival games are also simulating. The subtext I'm hearing here is that calling a game simulation is low-status or something. We have to protect VS's honor by making a distinction between the kind of simulation it is doing and sim games. I guess I'll just call it "realism" next time to avoid getting people's hackles up.- 74 replies

I did not know that! That's pretty cool. In a highly-moddable game like this, I almost never run two games on the same set of mods. I am currently playing Vanilla+, but I'm building two modpacks to try out at some point -- one centered around biomes and Fauna of the Stone Age (debating whether to play Homo Sapiens, but I kinda like the unholy monsters, so I think I'll keep rift activity and disable temporal storms) and another built around fantasy and magic inspired by all the Adventure Mode discussions. The latter uses a brighter, more saturated texture pack. All of that is a long way of saying that IMHO mod profiles are a must whether the game is finished or not. And I'm not sure this game exactly gets finished anyway.

I'm pretty sure 3-stage leathermaking and 5-nutrient nutrition aren't part of heroic fantasy. Neither is farming or animal domestication. The game can be both.- 74 replies

OK, I find this line of thinking perplexing in the context of this particular game. Pretty much everything other than the rust monsters IS simulation. This is a simulation game. ETA: Considering your high-combat, permadeath playstyle, maybe you in fact aren't playing a sim game. Those of us who are focused on farming, domesticating livestock, and whatnot are playing simulation.- 74 replies

I'm pretty sure you're 100% wrong there. Demos for new games have been included in existing games before. It's considered a benefit. If you don't like Homo Sapiens mode, you could say the same thing. Or Exploration. This game is built around being insanely configurable to dozens of playstyles. Some features that are added to a game just aren't going to be ones you like. Full stop.

We're always doing simulation until we're not. Torches are pretty romanticized in this and that other game. They're not all that practical irl. I'd totally be up for an interesting alternate mechanic for early game light. Heh. I suppose sitting in the dark at night until you have candles would be more realistic, but as you say, not so much fun. Holy crap. I can see why you wouldn't be interested in a smoke mechanic.- 74 replies

It wouldn't bug me if I had the means to get rid of it by burning in a fireplace with chimney. And a lot of things like pit kilns and forges would be better off in places not completely enclosed. What bugs me about mist in the house is that I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be there in misty weather. The mist would be outside the house.- 74 replies

I'm pretty sure that's new. I think in 1.20 you just have to find the treasure trader just like any other trader. At least, that was my assumption. I thought 1.21 added an additional way to get directions to the treasure trader to help out worlds like mine where the randomizer is just not work in our favor.
-
Ha. That makes me feel better. I am deeply committed to my current world, but I get distracted easily by survival mechanics, and I've located plenty of traders that are not treasure traders. I'm having a lovely time, and I assume I'll find it eventually! So, it sounds like you COULD find a baby one and raise it if you explored the right areas, but it's not required.

Slow-moving dork who hasn't actually found Chapter 1 here -- do you have to get to Chapter 2 content to tame and ride elks, or is that something you can start on at any time?

Heh. I'm totally the target audience for this smoke and chimney idea. Clearly it's polarizing . There really is something fundamental about smoke rising from a chimney. I create faux chimneys for my firepits, but that doesn't really fill the need. Some folks want harder and more engaging monster fights. I want richer homesteading (but also reasonably challenging threats. Heh.) I didn't know about the decorative chimney block, though. I will have to play around with that. I can't speak to the performance issues around smoke, but it sounds like it would be a real issue. There's already the mist effect for vision reduction, though. Seems like you could do something with that. (Tangentially, it does really bug me that the mist effect occurs inside my base.)- 74 replies
