I play on an "island" map, my home is on a big island surrounded by ocean on all sides. After about the first year or so, Every Chicken and Rabbit in my game has run off into the ocean never to be seen again, they swim so far away that they leave render distance, putting them at the very edge of possible range, which means they are VERY far away from land. I've even had to start placing dirt over a large lake in the centre of my island because animals decide to go for a permanent swim instead of roaming around on land. This has made my island feel much less alive, made hunting more difficult as i need to go harvest them while sinking into the depths of the ocean (this sicks even more during winter as it gives me the "soaking wet" condition), and makes it impossible for rabbits to eat the crops i want them to eat (Planted some too late, winter hit, want rabbits to eat the crops so i get guaranteed seeds back) since they're all going for a swim. I have more Mammals in my ocean then i do fish! So with that, if anyone can program in a mod that makes it so that animals will: 1. Avoid entering water whenever possible, even if being chased 2. Seek to exit the water ASAP if they somehow end up in water and 3. Die if they're in water for... lets say longer then 2 in-game days. i would really appreciate it. it'd be nice if this was a basegame thing, but until that happens, i can only hope someone's willing to make a mod for it.

i always moved rams around by throwing a rock at it and then running like hell until it stopped chasing me. Usually take some damage on the way, but it's much less likely to kill the ram then a spear, and it gets them pretty far. Haven't tried penning any in yet though. I only have Chickens and Boars. Chickens i penned in by chasing some hens and a rooster into a U-shaped enclosure connected to a larger fully-enclosed pen. i just broke the fences leading into the pen itself, and they ran right in. The Boars i just built a fence around while they were sleeping, they'd been loading in that one area for a long time already.

So what i learned you can do: Build a Trough (maybe a few, some animals need to eat a lot) and place it in the wild near some animals you want to breed. Fill it with food and check back every so often. the animals will breed even if not contained. They just need to eat enough portions. Got a pregnant bighorn sheep out there somewhere.

long story short,. i live on an island, and my ocean is FILLED with rabbits, chickens, and other animals that have no qualms with going for an endless swim. Recently went out in a boat and killed as many as i could find in hopes they'd re-spawn on my island since it's become pretty lifeless. Problem is they were all sitting out on the furthest edges of the loaded world from my house, so i suspect most of them will be unloaded now that i'm home. Will the corpses still decay / despawn and the animals respawn even though i haven't harvested them?
-
think i saw this in a minecraft mod one time. though it was much shorter, more like 1-2 minutes of sitting on the ground.
-
i haven't seen any corpses in there, so i'm suspecting i just legitimately haven't had any roosters born yet. then again i don't go into the pen too often, since it slows down egg-hatching. What i'll probably do is stop feeding them, wait until all current eggs hatch, and then go in and kill off any generation 0 hens. if i see generation 2 hens, i might kill off the gen 1 hens too.
-
now THAT explains why i only have one rooster. Survival of the fittest i say!
-
So from what i know, Chickens will stop being afraid of the player after around 10 generations of breeding. Problem is, as far as i can tell at least, i only have one rooster, a wild caught one that helped start my whole farm. Currently my chicken pen has a bunch of wild caught chickens and generation 1 chickens. I'm not sure if I've seen any generation 2 ones yet. If i were to remove all the wild-caught hens and leave only generation 1 hens and the wild rooster, would they produce generation 2 hens? If i remove all the gen 1 hens, would i then get gen 3 hens? Basically, could that one wild-caught rooster take me all the way to generation 10? or would i need to wait until i get newborn roosters?

Alright, so i was able to confirm, rope ladders WILL go underwater. AND you can build on them while underwater. It's a bit jank, but i was able to get a single dirt air-pod made at the bottom of the first group of rope ladders. Still not deep enough to get to the ruins, but I'm out of rope, and winter is coming, so i suspect this won't be proceeding forwards for awhile.

... Well bugger, that ain't good. Here i was thinking i was safe inside my home. guess not... Welp...
-
i feel like they might have a chance of glitching through walls and entering the house though. I had a strong temporal storm going on, and suddenly there was a Drifter in my home two or three blocks away from me, right at the corner of the structure. Had to lock myself in my bedroom before making a run to the new house i was building to hide in the basement there. died at least twice to the whole process.

no idea personally, but what i did is set a self-imposed territory for myself. Anything between the Eastern side of the mountain and the Ocean is "my Territory" and i shouldn't hunt the tameable animals because i might need them later. Anything to the West of the mountains is "The Wilds" and is free-game all year round. So if i need Meat, Leather, or more commonly Fat, i go over there. Personally I've found that Predators like Wolves and Bears provide a good source of leather and fat, and while you can't do much with their meat, it's still better then nothing. If you want a reliable meat food source though, i recommenced setting up near a small pond with Salmon in it, those things re-spawn daily, so it's an almost infinite supply.

i'll need to look into rope ladders then!

how would i sink a ladder? Build a floating dirt-bridge from the island, then make a dirt-pillar down a few blocks, and attach a ladder to it? Not entirely sure what you're saying here sorry.
-
might take a lot of effort then, it's not near any kind of cliff or anything, seems to be flat on the ocean floor, so i might need to make multiple stops from the nearest island.

Found some ancient ruins that are deep, DEEP underwater in my world. I'd like to try and explore them, but my breath bar drains before i can even get close, and that's not even mentioning the whole "entire screen goes black" thing which is terrifying all on it's own Don't suppose there's any kind of rebreather, or air-bladder or something maybe?

ahh okay. No idea if i have cave-ins enabled or not, dug a pretty big hole in the area looking for stuff behind the cracked stone and never had any cave-in, though at the same time i've also had gravel, sand, and mud collapse when stacked too tall.

was digging around in some granite the other night, trying to prospect for ores while also gathering stones for cobblestone, and i came across a huge patch of cracked granite deep underground. I dug around a bit, found it wasn't any different to normal granite, and was wondering if there was some kind of explanation or reason for it's presence. is it hiding some ruins or ore somewhere? or is it just random cracked granite for no reason?

as a guy who lives alone on an island with the only other intelligent life being Richard, a merchant who lives on the opposite side of the island, i approve of this idea. i would love the ability to build Richard a house at my location and have him move in. Even if it's only for a limited time per year. Maybe it's just his winter home or something idk.

I have lakes and oceans full of rabbits, raccoons, foxes, chickens, and even a handful of sheep. I have more mammals in my waters then i have fish at this point, and they seem more then content to just stick around in the water where it's next to impossible to hunt them properly. I've resorted to covering an entire lake with dirt just so that the animals will remain in the local ecosystem rather then trying to avoid it. It would be great if non-fish animals in water sought out and returned to the nearest landmass possible, and avoided entering large bodies of water in the first place.

i think it'd be a neat idea if we could highlight or encircle locations on our map to show different territories or regions we've assigned to ourselves. Similar to the image attached. Maybe this could be done by free-drawing on the map, or making a unique type of waypoint where everything in-between them gets highlighted or outlined or the like, but i think it'd be neat.

you could explain it away as the player doing something to make the fire burn hotter while cooking, while when not cooking, they do something so it's not as hot, thus burning the logs away less quickly. controlling airflow into the fire maybe, idk. I just thought it'd be a neat and reasonable mechanic.
