While you are waiting for the cooking to be expanded in vanilla, something I also look forward too, you could try a mod.. https://mods.vintagestory.at/artofcooking ..it provides new recipes as well as a new bronze cooking pot.

Traditionally, IRL that is, gold tools were ornaments, not practical. You say this in your second paragraph, "Gold is a metal entirely impractical to use in tools or weapons in real life". Just because you can smith them doesn't mean you are meant to use them. That argument could be used for things like zinc or lead but those aren't valuable metals. I've got nothing against it, I just think those metals would be better suited to things like jewellery (the lead ingot is already used for windows), or for adding detail when chiselling. There is so much "clutter" to be found that I'd be surprised if there isn't some form of jewellery or trinket crafting at some point.
-
Those metals are used as alloys in game, so it's not like they are useless metals, what's more they are used as alloys in real life too for the simple reason they are not strong enough. What would be more realistic is to use that sort of metal to make trinkets and jewellery. The lead poisoning is an interesting thing as lead was used "medicinally" in the time period VS's alternative timeline exists in, people had no idea it was poisonous.

I think there is a lot more to come in regard to this, whether that be vanilla or via mods. We have no loom, we have no wool, we have no tanning rack, etc... If you want to compare this to TFC, then there is a lot of scope for adding stuff in.
-
I guess it would need to be at the OS level, unless the game has a more detailed log file. There are numerous utils out there, it depends on the OS you are using although that window UI suggests it's MS. If that is the case, the native pktmon may be all you need.

Howto remove new decor system wallpapers to reuse?
Broccoli Clock replied to Filip Nowak's topic in Questions
* bump * 1.20.7 Whether it affects all wallpaper I cannot tell you, but the brown wallpaper cannot be reclaimed once removed from a wall. Doesn't matter what tool is used, or just an empty hand, either way the minute it comes off the wall it disappears. Other items are fine; rugs, pictures, etc.. just the wallpaper. I will log a bug, but thought I'd bump this old thread for awareness. Edit: bug reported .. https://github.com/anegostudios/VintageStory-Issues/issues/5692 -
I was in my house, during a temporal storm, a nightmare drifter appeared behind me, I turn and it one-shotted me. I've killed nightmare drifters before, and I'm sure they've hit me before too, and taken a decent chunk out of my health (~30-50%?) but never completely. It's difficult to compare, with the food stats leaning into your HP (so the red bar could be fill but your HP not maxxed out). I'll just take it on the chin, and learn to run away, but a list of typical DPS would be ideal, at least to prioritise those who can "unalive you" without you having a chance to defend it.

This is such a low level "issue" but I thought I'd mention it, when my pumpkins died their tooltip still calls them "growing"..

Make water fill air blocks under itself PLEASE, I BEG YOU
Broccoli Clock replied to NastyFlytrap's topic in Suggestions
Other blocks fine, for shelves.. (imo) ..it's daft and unintuitive. It's not a game breaking bug though. -
Make water fill air blocks under itself PLEASE, I BEG YOU
Broccoli Clock replied to NastyFlytrap's topic in Suggestions
If you want to add to the request list, how about not allowing a water source block to be placed on a shelf. I kid you not, enjoy this silliness.. -
Thanks. Shame though, I thought I'd found a very lucrative, sustainable, trade. Makes me wonder what the point of capturing a cub is, wouldn't it just attack you as it grew older?
-
This has me wondering, I've seen traders who buy wolf cubs, and I've seen traders who sell wolf cubs, is it possible to sell cubs you trap in reed baskets? I've only captured chickens and a piglet so far, although you can catch cubs, but it showed as the animal inside the basket, not as a separate item in your inventory. Or is it literally a 1 to 1 trade, buy a cub then sell a cub, and the cub acts like a normal inventory item.

For some reason this is what I use for the different fuel types... Wood / Firepit Peat / Pit Kiln Charcoal / Bloomery Brown Coal / Crucible & Forge ..it's not set in stone, if I don't have brown coal or peat I just use a different fuel type.

I think it's important to provide a little context here, you are absolutely right, but it's more the case that everything is being scanned, just connecting a device (any device) to the Internet will end up with it being scanned. I used to do this years ago when companies were stupid enough to mass produce things like routers or webcams all with the same admin username/password, and war driving is 'still a thing'. It's multiple IPs but from just 2 sources, it's not some mass port hit in a DDoS. The fact that it happened at the same time suggests there is a link between those two sources, but I'd still be tempted to call it a general sniff than something more targetted. Unless you have more logs. The thing that does make me stop and show concern is the file size error log, trying to upload a ~900Kb file would definitely be called "sus". It'd be interesting to see what form those other invalid packets took.

Interesting and geeky. Do you plan on posting those results of the tests you did? Personally I don't notice intermittent lag spikes that could signal the default GC in action, nor do I experience memory leaks (and I have the game sitting out of focus for hours, popping in and out of it when I have time). That's SP though, with the need to create and destroy lots of objects being far more common in MP. Did you try this in a MP environment, and if so, was there a noticeable difference? One thing to note, we don't have visibility over the code base and we don't know what is going on "under the hood" as it were. There are many ways to deal with GC, and not just explicitly. We don't know if the devs have done anything specific regarding memory management inside the code, and the config tends to be for compiling and runtime configurations (like moving from dev to prod). That said, what is in the config isn't going to break anything, and it may help some people on low memory or a lower spec PC that could get spikes from GC in operation. Thank you, and @tgstyle you should know to provide more than just a file and say "drop it into your folder". Even if the settings are pretty benign, providing a malicious config is definitely possible. Which is why you should provide a plain text output along with the file. -- as this is a geeky subject (thankfully we aren't working in C/C++!) here's some further reading for anyone interested in what gcServer/gcConcurrent actually do -- [MSND] - Fundamentals of garbage collection [MSDN] - Memory management and garbage collection (GC) in ASP.NET Core [MSDN] - Analyze memory usage in release builds (C#, Visual Basic, C++, F#)

Bowtorns desperately need their accuracy nerfed. I don't mind them spawning, I don't mind fighting them, but several times today I've literally walked round a corner and been 3 tapped by bowtorns before I had the chance to do anything. Their accuracy doesn't seem to be affected by distance. There is a bug with bowtorns just now, they can spawn inactive. Which is fine, they won't hurt you, but when you are facing 6 bowtorns knowing they will let loose with a very accurate projectile almost immediately, the last thing you need are decoys, video in spoiler.. (a bug has been reported)

So, can't tell you if it's normal or not, but it looks like generic sniffing. For a start there are too many hits for it to be targetting a specific port number, while there aren't enough for it to be a mass port check. I could be wrong with that, but just from the initial log that would be my assumption (which, again, could be wrong). Now, an interesting rabbit hole to go down is geolocating the IPs, as the majority are registered to a company in England called "Driftnet Ltd", with a couple of exceptions. For example, the 185.236.x.x are all Driftnet IPs, and if you go to the website for Driftnet then the fun begins. For a start it's an American company, not British, yet their registered office is an address in Oxford (England). What's more, a lot of its products are cyber-security related, which obviously gets the spidey senses tingling. What is interesting, is the 87.236.137.213 address, as that is apparently registered to Neutel Communications, which is an Internet provider from Bahrain. You asked if this was someone testing your system? Yes, it looks that way, multiple similar IPs all registered to the same company hitting your server all within a short period of time. However, and I should say that while I have studied cyber security as part of my qualifications I'm no expert, on the surface it looks like someone using a 3rd party tool, hosted by Driftnet to do some port sniffing, perhaps accidentally doing that sniffing from their own ISP assigned IP (hence the Bahrain hit). While that could seem suspicious, perhaps they are just sniffing a range of IPs and yours happened to be within that block, they could be doing general "white hat" research. As to what to conclude? No idea without more info, but the info we have is a tantalising first step down a rabbit hole. It's really tough without more data to be honest. If it's just this limited number of hits, I'd forget it but keep an eye on the logs.

Vintage Story impressions after about one month of playing
Broccoli Clock replied to Viceroy77's topic in Discussion
Food is all around you, for example cattail roots. Easy to find and cook, you will need a knife to harvest them and a fire place to cook them, but even in the depths of winter it's a decent food supply that is always available. In terms of nights and winters, I feel you, both feel "annoying" downtimes. In terms of night, look into creating a better bed. If you can manage to get flax (4x flax = twine, 4x twine = linen) you can create a bed that allows you to sleep longer. In caves you might be lucky enough to find a unbroken aged bed that increases sleep time more (straw bed = 7.5hrs, wooden bed = 8.5hrs, aged bed = 9.5hrs). Those extra 2 hours, if you can find the aged one (in ruins), really help quicken the nights. As for downtime outwith sleeping, then it's the same thing you'd be doing anyway; cooking, storage organising, smelting and building (or, chiselling, although that comes with an addiction warning!) I think ultimately the style of game that VS is, not immediately gratifying and needs some effort put into it, perhaps this is just not what you are looking for. The guide and the wiki have tons of info on how to do things, but if you aren't feeling it, knowing how to do something is different from wanting to do something. That said, if you do find it just too grindy or awkward, then perhaps spend time in creative. Learn all the blocks/block combinations, see the items in action without spending hours/days harvesting and crafting. Perhaps once you've experienced it "without limits", you might be tempted to go back to survival mode and a slower progress. -
In game, yes, should be an absolute doddle, and using the window settings you can determine if the users wants background noise from a non-focussed task. In C# you can attach to the default windows sound class easily, but I think(*) you need to do a bit of shenanigans to control the apps individually. That's not to say it's difficult, it's just not as exposed as you'd like for what seems like a fairly simple task. In terms of manually doing it on your desktop, and if you enjoy the "syntactical horrors" of python, a quick and easy solution would be to use something like PyCAW. * Might be different now, it's been a while since I've coded c# with any real intent.

Want me to start a fight? I think inventory should reflect size and weight, and not be slot based. That'll soon sort out the oddity of stack sizes.

Require Proper Lighting for Knapping and Other Voxel-Based Work
Broccoli Clock replied to Dowlgrett's topic in Suggestions
I mean... that's the point. Ever been running with a torch underground and fell into a water/waterfall? VS leaves you blind, in the dark and won't hold your hand. imo.. being "almost unplayable" at certain points is a design decision, not an unintended bug. -
Not going to lie, VS is very happy sitting minimised. In fact I've probably added 20 odd hours to each world just from that alone, but I do go into the options and turn the sound down. If you look in the graphics settings there are "fullscreen" and a "fullscreen always on top" options, and I am guessing it would be easy enough to hook up a blur event to check the rendering option and mute the sounds or not. Somewhat annoyingly there is no way at a Windows OS level to do this via settings. You could, of course, do this manually, there are several scripts out there, and I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to create an app (python, c#, java, etc) that monitors the focus of apps and mutes the relevant ones when minimised.

While I wouldn't expect a root and branch update to the combat either (a) ever, or (b) for some time, the one thing that would be nice at this moment is the "sweeping mechanic" for the falx. It may be in the game, but I've not managed to achieve it. I imagine most people understand how a sweeping mechanic works, but for those unsure it calculates the swing of a weapon and its hit radius, then it calculates which (if any) enemies within that calculated area are damaged. Those closer and more central will get more damage, those either to the periphery or at the start or end of the swing will be damaged less.

Was underground, ran into a large Locust spawning region. Ok, I can do this, and yes, I did it. I cleared it out, with lots of dead locust bodies around. However, I then got a bunch of drifters attacking me. Fine, I'll repeat the process. No, sadly not, because your attack is stopped by the Locust body, while the drifters' attack is not. I ended up in a cramped location, with a pile of Locust bodies next to me, a number of drifters blocking a exit, but I couldn't hit them with either a spear or a falx. This is not a problem for the drifters though, they seem capable of hitting through Locusts. As there is no way to harvest/remove Locusts, and because they hamper CQC, could they either disappear a few seconds after death, or allow us some way to remove the bodies.
