I came up with this simple solution and I'm glad to find somebody else did too. I second the request for any modder interested to make a mod like this.
As somebody that primarily plays VS with a small group of friends whom don't all have the same ability/interest to be online as much as the people who are on the most, this would be really helpful. I really appreciate the land claim tools the game has and this would probably enough of a reason for my group of friends to actually use them when making our little community. The suggestion to only provide the spoilage prevention when the food isn't accessable to anyone but the owner is good as well even if for my group it wouldn't be necessary.
I've been interested in learning to make mod content for games for long enough that I'd even be open to trying to make such a mod, if it sounds like it'd be something a novice could handle.
