What I want to see in future Vintage Story (Combat, Dimensions, Magic)

Recommended Posts

Vintage Story is an absolutely awesome game. It still very much has the early-access feel, though, and as a game developer myself (Unity, sadly, otherwise I'd apply to Anego Studios), I want to throw some ideas into the ring.

Combat:

-Right now, combat (and some movement things in general) are really janky. You can feel the difference when you play Minecraft and Vintage Story. In Minecraft, for example, you can run smoothly up a 1-block tall staircase by holding the spacebar and so it feels fast to ascend up from a mineshaft.

-The sword/spear hits are also especially slow, in that they take a long time to hit after you click. You click, and then it feels like there's a second of delay before the hit lands. I'd rather that delay be moved backwards so you hit an enemy immediately and then have to wait, making the game feel more responsive.

Suggestions for Combat:

-Custom moves. There's a Minecraft mod called Epic Fight that does this extremely well and this is a perfect opportunity for Vintage Story to really improve on one of the weaker aspects of the game. This would also incentivize different types of weapons which might be more suited against different types of enemies. High-level drifters already have blades in their arms; I think this could make combat super engaging and fun, especially at high levels and against novel enemies.

Dimensions:

-The intersection of the gear dimension with our own is really cool, but it would be much scarier (and super exciting) if you could actually go to another dimension. A world filled with machinery and overpowered creatures for people who make steel armor and want a challenge they can repeatedly access. I'd love to fight Dave (the Thunderwarden).

-Minecraft has the Nether and the End, which are two of the most fun aspects of the game. Building portals would also allow for another layer of progression in the game and a sense of mystery, plus the chance to add in some crazy biomes and world-gen that you couldn't include normally in the world.

-There is so much potential for new and exciting creatures. 'Made in Abyss' is a great place to look for inspiration. Dave already looks eerily like a Turbinid-Dragon.

Magic:

-This game's magical element and Lovecraftian horror is really a selling point. I would love to be able to experiment with magic. The Thaumcraft Minecraft mod is an excellent starting point, especially the concept of Taint, or in this case, Rot. I'd love to see the Rot and the Rust balanced against each other. I feel like this would really enhance the theme and the immersion. Vintage Story already feels fantastical and I'd love to bring that to life through Alchemy and magical Lore.

Lastly...

I'd love for some very creepy/mysterious entities to be added to the game without being made public. Herobrine is obviously super well-known in Minecraft, but a mysterious entity watching you fits so much better with Vintage Story's theme. You'd probably want this to be only present in hardcore mode so that it doesn't mess with people trying to play a chill game, but an entity that moves around blocks, appears behind you in dark caves, and leaves you with an unsettling feeling that something isn't right would make this game incredibly immersive.

the Roadmap already includes "Improved combat" as a target for improvement.

this minecraft mod seems to lock you into third person while in "combat mode" and has trashy Naruto anime attacks thank god the dev for vintage story seams cultured enough to never implement something so trashy in the game. I'm sure the dev has a better idea than any of us as to what references would be of value for a combat overall project. games of note would probably be ones that have a simple satisfying system that reads well in a first person so people are not forced into third person for combat. zero reason why the inspiration would have to be drawn from any block based game.

"this is a perfect opportunity for Vintage Story to really improve on one of the weaker aspects of the game" the Minecraft mod creates an opportunity? what?

"High-level drifters already have blades in their arms" lol?

"There is so much potential for new and exciting creatures. 'Made in Abyss' is a great place to look for inspiration." for a forum that could be a place for intelligent discussion or constructive debate between strangers invested in this game you have just attempted to give an anime recommendation.

"The intersection of the gear dimension with our own is really cool, but it would be much scarier (and super exciting) if you could actually go to another dimension" i  have to agree with this one thing, although I have no idea know how it could be done tastefully and not come off as some kind of Minecraft neather Imitation. i played this game multiplayer with someone and they walked up to a rift and asked "does this bring me to another world if i stand in it? what happens?" and they were disappointed when i had to tell them that all it does is make your screen distorted until it spawns monsters on you.

I'm undecided on another dimension in VS.  Having read quite a bit of Lovecraft's work (which provides the eldritch inspiration of this game) he rarely goes to other dimensions in his stories.  His stories are based on how people respond (and what happens to them) when something from a different dimension affects or invades our world.  In this the devs have done an absolutely masterful job of bringing Lovecraft to life.
