Dave is a machine, probably Falxian. Dave coincides w/ temporal storms. The stability gear turns backwards, possibly signifying time moving backwards.

I believe Dave cleanses the land somehow- and the storms are but a small price to pay for it.

Falxian tech was merely observed and mimicked via The Lens- meaning Dave might originate from the alternate reality... which I think got corrupted when the Great Machine went off- hence why the "rust world" and "rifts" and "drifters" are all now a thing? Highly speculative ofc

I think Jonas is Dave, the tower explosion somehow turned him into an interdimensional being capable of manipulating time, but doomed to contain the rot by rewinding time every now and then, forever walking against the clock.
We can only see it when the rot grows big enough to almost reach us.

An interesting theory, but not really possible considering that the tower explosion happened after the Grand Machine's awakening(which caused the temporal storms to start happening) and the Old World's downfall. It's not yet known exactly what happened to Jonas after the Grand Machine awoke, though it seems a fairly safe assumption that he's still alive(or at least, was alive long enough to cross paths with Tobias post-calamity) but perhaps no longer fully human.
