Echo Weaver Posted October 24, 2024 Report Posted October 24, 2024 I was reading through release notes for previous versions, and I found a detailed description of nerfs for underground gardening... which indicates that this is something that plenty of players were doing. What makes underground gardening appealing? Is it possible to get a lower temperature underground so that heat-sensitive crops can grow?
Maelstrom Posted October 24, 2024 Report Posted October 24, 2024 It's more for cold climates. Underground gardens at the right world height level can farm nearly all year round in the harshest of climates. 1

I assume underground temperatures tend to equalize, with a hotter surface leading to cooler temperatures underground and cold surface leading to the reverse? Is underground gardening still effective at 19.x?
Maelstrom Posted October 24, 2024 Report Posted October 24, 2024 I do not know. I haven't done underground gardening. For warm climates farming in the sky with Lucy (pardon the pun) will be more productive as temperatures drop with increased elevation.

It describes the new limits on underground farming, but it doesn't explain why one would want to do that or how much the original value of underground farming was reduced.
Thorfinn Posted October 24, 2024 Report Posted October 24, 2024 Unless you are in polar, it's more hassle than it's worth. It's trivial to stock a cellar with so much food that in a few game-months, you will be working full time producing barrels to compost all the rot. 1
Krosis Posted November 14, 2024 Report Posted November 14, 2024 I am currently playing in the artic with underground farming on, and at y=1 I get arround +20°C compared to the surface. It makes a really big diference!

That part of the wiki talks about "levels" with respect to depth below sea level. in this case, does anyone know how deep one "level" is? is it one block to a level or is it more?

I think a level is just a vertical row of blocks.
