Several times while wondering the wilderness are simply enjoying life outdoors have I been attacked and killed by moose who decided that me, simply existing, was a crime against nature and therefore needed to be eliminated; several times I have lost all my stuff and spent hours getting it back. Vintage Story developers, MOOSE DON"T ATTACK AND KILL PEOPLE ON SIGHT; this fact is also made worse by the fact that they are more silent than WOLVES. THIS IS ABSURD, WHY ARE MOOSE DEADLIER THAN WOLVES???? WHAT HAS COMPELLED YOU TO DO THIS???? WERE YOU BRIBED TO MAKE THEM LOOK BAD?????

(This is a joke, though I really do hate the current implementation of moose.)

It would be nice to have a bit of warning that there's a moose there, but then again...if I were a moose and saw a potential threat, I'd probably want to go stomp it too. At least they do sometimes back off instead of stomping your face in. Generally I just run away, or if I'm engaging without armor or a bow, I'll throw a few spears and then engage with a crude shield/falx if I'm actually wanting the meat.

I know you said you were joking, but there might actually be a lore reason for the aggression. The "Ambush" tapestry notes that wolves have become much more territorial and aggressive since whatever cataclysmic event unfolded in the past, so it stands to reason that other wildlife might also have reason to be extra wary or aggressive.

Wolves are predators, moose are not. Also, I, frankly, don't care if there is a lore reason for this behavior: I hate it and want moose to become passive or aggressive if you get too close instead of K.O.S.

I seem to only have "curious" moose in my world. They walk up to me, then walk away, then walk up to me again, repeatedly, but without attacking. Well, until I'm digging something and they inadvertedly walk right into my shovel

Usually this. But I believe the males do eventually aggro if you ignore them long enough, like the rams do. Because of the way behavior appears to work, I think it's possible that aggro might be their first action once in range, though.

BTW, I have not read the code for moose yet. I'd rather learn by doing. I'm just guessing it's similar to other creatures (like rams) that I eventually did read to verify what I thought was happening.

Well, I am playing on the RC release (forgot to mention that), so they should change it back to the way it was before (but better) as you have described. I really hope they don't introduce this to the game.

Pretty sure it was like this in 1.19.8 (although I did quickly move onto 1.20PR...I think most of my bad moose experience was in 1.19)

In 1.19.8, my experience with moose is that they are always hyper-aggressive. Once one has their antlers squared on me, the chase is on -- and I'm not the hunter. At least they're a bit slower so I can eventually get away, but they are very tenacious. I exploit this to lure them to bear-pits.

On a slightly tangential note, I had a moose chasing me and I stumbled across a grizzly while running... managed to veer aside and the grizzly was then chasing us both. What surprised me is that the grizzly didn't even stop a moment to kill the moose. The moose was dead (and mostly eaten!) in an instant, and I followed in the next. It'd be a little more tolerable if they had to either take a moment to eat, or the corpse isn't "mostly eaten" in one hit. :)

Ha ha!  Pure nightmare fuel!

I also have died to the hyper aggressive moose.  They are cranky in real life and will charge and trample.  But here.... they are "plus ultra".

I have feeling that in 1.20 they went more aggressive. In the new gameplay, I had no incidents with bears or volves (just seen them and run away), but first kill went from a moose whom I supposed to just come and sniff as usual. They like an edge of forest nearby my base, spawning in herds of two or three regularly. So after getting used on it, they became quite reliable meat resource, because they are set to be stupid enough to attack until they die and I don't need to hunt them forever.

I love seeing moosi because it means another full crock for the shelf and another pelt for the floor.

If you are quick on your feet, you can back-strafe them with a spear and use the new 1.20 knock-back to completely avoid damage. Also, I often find that I can throw a spear at a charging moose causing it to turn around and flee.

Actually, I find them a lot more tedious to kill in 1.20 because of this reason.
