Brandon Dodd Posted February 26, 2025 Report Posted February 26, 2025 I have a old saved game with a lot of hours (1200+). I really want boats and oceans though. First question, is there a way to add "oceans" to my old world? Second question, I was playing with a new world and found a seed i had liked. I had messed with the water and land percentages though. My brother wants to play with me and i gave him the seed number and he created a server for it, but when we hopped in the world, there were no oceans. The question is, what is the seed number do exactly? If i gave him the number, does it load in the same map structure? or do my modification to the landscale/water percentages mess up the seed file and that's why we couldn't find Oceans on his server? I was watching Ashantin play on youtube recently and she said she wasn't giving out the seed on this recent play through because people would tell her where ore was, but in my seed and the server with the same seed, 0,120,0 coordinates were two completely different places. So i am curious how people could know for sure their and her coords were gonna match. TIL I hope i made some sense and someone can enlighten me.
Solution Zane Mordien Posted February 26, 2025 Solution Report Posted February 26, 2025 You can change world gen setting on your existing world and any new chunks will use it. You get janky terrain when it goes from old to new but it works no matter what the wiki says. Just send the save game file to your brother to load on the server. A single player save can be used on a mutiplayer game. If the seed is the same then as long as you have the same world generation settings it will be the same. Any change to the world gen settings will make it LOOK different but thr rock types, stability and things are the same. 1

Yes. I'm not sure which of the plethora of options affect mapgen, but many or most do. It is remarkably deterministic after that. If you regen the block you are standing on, for example, it will put back the surface nugget or crop you just collected, and you can pick it/them back up. Things that are time-based, like animal spawns, not so much. 1

Damn! What a profoundly dickish thing to do! I would have hoped for better from the VS community. Hope your problem got sorted out, OP.
