Livestock and feed Q

Bout to start trapping animals n such for farms but I was just wondering. How do they (say chickens for example) survive in the wild? When I trap chickens in a fenced off area do they start automatically starving until I put a trough down with grains etc or do they just happily feed off grass (and presumably bugs)? What are the general rules with keeping wild livestock

animals do not starve.  Feeding is only necessary for getting the females preggers or to fatten aminals up for slaughter.
