This can already be done in-game! All you need to make a greenhouse is the roof to be made of glass.

No the way this is actually made it is made to keep heat in so that you can actually Farm all year long, there is a link provided to explain how it works. In the game now you cannot grow all year round, in the winter months. at least you can go south but that's a different story.

There's an option you can poke to enable underground farming. You'll need that, it's somewhere behind the "customize world" button on the world-creation screen. There's also a server command to enable it on an existing world, which I completely don't remember.

Once that's on, a LITTLE bit of depth like what's shown here doesn't really do much, but the temperature does increase gradually as you go down. There's a multiplayer server that dug a Big Hole over the past few weeks -- like, LARGE Big Hole-- and they're planting tropical stuff on the lower terraces because it just never gets cold there.

The Big Hole people have posted several videos about it over on r/vintagestory, the last one is at

As of right now in the game The Underground farming is just a setting. I'm talking about real life underground farming there is a whole thing I even put a link to how it works and how you build a underground farm that you can Farm all year round. I think it would be really neat if they implemented this into the game so that there is a way for you to farm all year round you would have to get the materials for it and you can build it your own way. I don't want to just build a hole and put stuff in it like it is right now that feels like it's kind of cheating.

It's a neat idea, but I'd wager that the core reason it isn't a thing in the game is to make winter something that players need to account for if they live in a colder climate. Greenhouses extend the growing season, but under normal circumstances you'll still have periods where crops won't grow at all, meaning you'll need to preserve food. If you can just farm all year long then the winter is pretty much meaningless.

For year-round farming regardless of climate, I'd gate that behind some sort of Jonas tech that you can upgrade a greenhouse with. That way players will still need to account for a few winters before having that kind of luxury.

I do agree that having a few Winters in before you can do this would be the right way to put it in there I just think it would be any cool to be able to have it down the road.

Agreed, but this could provide a bonus as well instead of fully nullifying temperature. Anyway, I do not believe this would fully remove the challenge of seasons, the greenhouse could get too hot in the summers.

True, but in the summer you can grow crops outside, so greenhouses aren't really needed.

if i remember correctly there is a greenhouse mechanic in game where you use the glass block recipe to craft an internal farming area that increases internal temperatures by 5 degrees.

also though growing in spring or summer isn't a problem fall tends to drop frost which has a large chance of killing your crops if the cold is to far beyond their safe limits, while they have reduced produce when growing if outside of their safe limits. so the greenhouse while expensive can be necessary with long crops such as grain, as rye, barley and spelt, all have different growing temperatures. for instance barley adores the cold, while spelt is very much a spring plant, and rye loves the heat.

My Hope Is they just have a giant farming/ gardening and harvesting update where they just put all kinds of plants trees and stuff in the game. To give us even more stuff that we want to have a greenhouse. I like the games I give a quick Greenhouse right now I just like to have one that functions a little differently and you can work your way up. And you can use all year round.
