Hello! Allow me to introduce you to my hunting lodge that I share with my good friend and hungry blackguard. We are playing on a modded server with increased hunger and slower healing, giving more value to food and bandages than is in the base game.

Let's take a look at the entrance. I have built it off the ground like a traditional cabin so that air can circulate underneath and keep it cool in the summer. This of course means colder winters, but with a fireplace in every major room, that's not a problem.

Initially we settled in a dugout in a hill, digging until we met stone and working through the nights to gather as many resources as we could. Eventually my friend started working on a humble forge to not only expand our storage areas but also keep the forge and fires out of the rain. Once we had copper, I ran a trotline and added fish to our diet which made stockpiling redmeat-based meals easier.

We also setup a small farm. Initially we didn't have very good soil and had to bring in medium-fertility soil from other places... the hazards of building so close to a forest I guess. Large deer wandered up and we managed to trap a male and a female and have slowly begun breeding them. A greenhouse helps us get some crops started early that would need warmer climates to thrive. Looks like I need to do some weeding... grass is growing in the Terra Preta.... >_>

Got a big gear with clutches and transmissions so we can choose what runs off the windmill. I also installed a brake which confused my friend the first time. Maybe some day brakes will become useful in VS but right now they're pretty useless.

Back to the main house, we have a little stable for our elks. They look bored.

The rest of these pictures won't have much explanation as I'm getting tired of typing. Just enjoy the unguided virtual tour of my house!

WOW INSANELY JEALOUS!!!

I do not have the creativity or know-how to create a base like this. Was it just organically created as time went on? or did you plan it from the beginning?

it was planned from the beginning. The actual placement of the lodge wasn't planned, but I found a spot for it and we made it work.

Here's an IMGur album of all the screenshots I wanted to upload.

WOAH Is that Taxedermy???

I hope you don't mind if I take some design ideas 👉👈 You truly have a vision for these sorts of things!

Yes that is taxidermy! and go ahead! I had fun making this :)

Daym, I absolutely love the facade!

Is it kapok you're using for the forge?.. haven't seen the debarked version yet. That's really pretty dark color

What I also see, you clearly don't give enough love to your windmill, that's okay tho, I myself still struggle with the design I would like... :D

Don't discount yourself--if you set your mind to it, you can do it! One nice thing about building in Vintage Story is that it gives you a nice selection of premade pieces to build with, such as roofs and stone tile flooring. You don't need to be a master chiseler or anything to build something that looks good, although I do recommend playing around with chiseling when you get the chance 😁.

My advice is to start simple, and then add more bits as you're inspired. If you start with a small single-room house, you can add a longer rectangle to it to give it a more interesting shape. Add more boxes and rectangles as needed, connecting them together with doorways and staircases and whatever else makes sense for your vision. Simple squares and rectangles also mean that building the roof will be an easier task too. Add windows where desired in order to enjoy the local views. Once you have the main shell of your building in place, then you can start adding in decorations like paintings or tapestries, or adding in utility items like chests and crates. Bookcases are useful for storing lore books(if you play with lore enabled); potted plants add a natural touch. To showcase other curiosities you've found in your travels, display cases will offer the perfect placement solution.

It's one of those things I always think about and never actually get around to doing anything about.

It's tawhai, I believe, from this mod: https://mods.vintagestory.at/floralzonesneozeylandicregion

The planks you see used in the forge are also tawhai. As for the lodge flooring, that is totara, also from the same mod. Stripped kapok and kapok boards have a beautiful golden brown color--kapok was used for a few of the antler mounts, as well as the dining table.

I swear, one of us will fix it! Maybe...someday...eventually...I swear the one on the last server looked a lot nicer. 🤣

As @traugdor already noted, that is taxidermy. The blockier looking animals are from Primitive Survival, which allows you to place pelts on the walls and floor as decoration(you can place pelts on the floor in vanilla too, but it won't look like an actual creature). The mounted fish are also from Primitive Survival. The rest of the taxidermy is from the Fauna of Stone Age mods.

Thanks for that Miss Dragon! You've given me a newfound confidence and a direction to sort of go in for building 😄 I've run out of reactions for the day so i couldn't like your reply 🙃

Ah I see! Thanks for providing the mods 🫡 it would've been a nightmare to look for them...

Don't sweat it. To loosely paraphrase the late great Bob Ross--it's your world, so you get to decide what kind of happy little things go where.

The mods themselves are fairly popular and kept up to date, so they should be relatively easy to find. I know there are more mods than that installed(though I don't remember exactly what), but those are the most relevant in terms of decoration.
