Coercing animals long distance.

So animals seem to spawn around me but not with in the 48 (or however many) block radius to enticed them to my house. Is there a way to get, say chickens to come to my place.  
The only thing I can figure is to do it incrementally. Which sounds icky...

The only way that I am aware of is to chase them into a pit or fenced area. One way to get them into a pen would be to put dirt blocks around the fence so that they will jump on the dirt block and run right over the fence and be penned.
