i just went to make a cup of tea and some breakfast after finding something i thought was really cool, i paused the game but i must not have or something happened because when i came back i was dead my four leather packs my full set of iron armour that i had in my inventory and all my iron tools including my compound bow and my stack of iron arrows had de-spawned. i feel horrible, i just found an ocean big enough for the sailing boat iv had my first (failed) stab at the library and now iv lost the armour that i needed to complete it i think i need a brake now.
after 200 hours on this world on a note book laptop wile iv been unwell in bed iv lost the most important things to me in this game.

You know, this might be unpopular to say, but if losing your stuff upon death causes you to consider quitting, maybe it's better if you turn that mechanic off. Death punishment as a game mechanic is meant to make the player feel more cautious and try harder to stay alive, and that adds to the fun. But when that punishment causes you to lose a huge chunk of progress, that isn't any fun.

I have drop items on death disabled on my playthroughs because I hate how it can just totally kill my enthusiasm for a playthrough. I'm a fan of alternative death punishments though. I know there's a mod out there that advances the calendar by a day or two when you die, so the punishment is an opportunity penalty rather than potentially losing your progress.

I do agree, however, despite my distaste for lost items, I actually opt to keep the penalty on rather than turning it off. My reasoning for that is playing with the threat of the penalty helps keep me cautious, and prevents some stupid stuff from being a solution(like eating a deathcap to save a walk home). If I do happen to die, and can't be bothered to run back to get my stuff, it's easy enough to pop into spectator/creative and use a bit of console magic to pick up where I left off.

Plus I mean, leaving the death penalty on also gives a reason to build the terminus teleporter, and use all those temporal gears that inevitably pile up.

Fair enough. Do any alternative penalties come to mind? There's that mod I mentioned, but that wouldn't work with multiplayer. Maybe a set of debuffs that either go away over time, or healed immediately if the player returns to their point of death.

Not really. I suppose resurrection sickness, in that the player receives a debuff to health and attack power for a short time after death(World of Warcraft did this). However, that's not really fun either. Maybe just drain a hefty chunk of the stability gauge instead to respawn with your items, but if you don't have enough stability/would fall too dangerously low, then you lose your items instead?

I noticed I still lose a ton of nutrition points upon death even with the item loss off.  I do like the idea of an optional rez sickness or a loss of stability as well.  I'm all for death penalties, I just dread losing my hard earned stuff too much!
