Hello, beautiful seraphs of our world. I'm starting to learn how to crochet and I would love to try my hand on something VS themed. I'm thinking about a color crochet panel.

Since I'm a beginner, I was thinking about starting with a few colors (3 to 5). To make the process smoother, I’m looking for a design where the colors are grouped in solid blocks rather than scattered pixels (dithering), as frequent color swaps can be quite tricky for a newbie!

I’m aiming for a rectangular panel of approximately 64 columns by 96 rows. Since you all are masters of the chiseling tool and know how to create amazing art within the grid constraints of our world, I was wondering if anyone has (or could help me design) a pattern that fits these specs?

I’m thinking of iconic shapes like a stylized temporal gear, a simplified drifter, or even a minimalist landscape with a charcoal pit and a pine tree.

Does anyone have a grid or a pixel art idea that would look great in yarn? I’d love to see your suggestions and, of course, I'll share the final result here once it's finished!

Adding the phrase, "Pixel Art", to the title might catch the attention of chiselers.

For bits of finer detailing: there is a technique in knitting where you essentially 'sew' colored yarn on top of an already knit fabric - think 'embroidery.' The colored yarn follows the path of the knit stitches, giving the visual effect that they were knit as part of the fabric. I don't know if this is possible with crochet, but perhaps you could use the concept to figure out how to add a little bit of detail here and there.

I know that I've seen a tool for converting pictures into pixels for embroidery and knit colorwork. It was so long ago though and I cannot think of how to find it. Here are a few other resources for finding people that could help you (or find pictures for ideas):

  • People often share screenshots of their work at r/Vintage Story.
  • VS DIscord may also be a good place to ask this question. Here is the invitation link.
  • Ravelry dot com is another good resource. Not only for their extensive pattern database, but also their special interest groups. Fiber enthusiasts are often very helpful brainstorming ideas. (eta: if you provide a picture of a drifter, for instance, someone may be able to help you create a pattern)

As someone who has (admittedly in the past) knitted, crocheted and even dabbled in macramé.. good luck, I hope you have fun.

In terms of this game, the voxel graphics should give you lots of inspiration. If I had any advice, don't go too detailed to begin with. It's far too easy to get stuck midway through a complicated piece you wish you hadn't started. Shapes like the gear or a side on view of a drifter, rather than launch into something more complex, would be a good starting point, imo.

One thing that comes to mind here is you try looking at the in-game tapestries for inspiration. The designs are probably more complicated than what you'd want to attempt as a beginner, however, they do use basic colors and you could use portions of the designs(like the gears) as a template.

Also when it comes to making a design template, you'll likely want to have some graph paper on hand. Very useful for cross-stitch, bead weaving, or other work that features a grid.
