Can someone please explain the "raw hide huge" item?

Hi Everyone,

Noob here and really enjoying the game.  I just got to my first winter and now I would like to make a rawhide mantle.  One of the recipe options is to use a knife/shears with a Raw Hide (huge), but I don't know how to obtain this item.  I have killed a brown bear and a black bear and have both their hides with heads.  From what I am reading you are able to remove the head after curing with fat (not sure about this), but that would mean it would change to a pelt if I'm not mistaken?  Am I missing something?

I am just going to make this out of small hides for now, but would really like to know how to do this since there seem to be other situations where this item could be useful for crafting as well.

If this cannot be done it seems the only use for these hides are either the bear armour (I have leather which seems to be better) and leather making.  Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Before bear armour was added in 1.21, there were no bear-specific pelts and so all bears would drop the huge hides.
Nowadays I don't know, I think you're right in mentioning that the head can be removed but I don't know if that can be done with the raw hides or only the pelts.

You can remove the head from the bear hide with a knife in the crafting grid, but if I understand this correctly, this just deletes the head. If you want to turn it into bearhide armor, you have to cure it with fat first.

Leather armor is generally better because it is also repairable.

You can also (i think?) throw the whole bear hide into a barrel to limewash it and it will come out as a prepared, headless, huge hide.

Thank you everyone for the input.  I will try to answer all in order.

@Frisk DreemurrThank you, I will give this a go as soon as I come across one and revert back.

@ifozThank you, when looking at the recipes it almost seems as if some of the old content is still there that needs to be removed. When clicking on the item there is no "obtained by" section.

@dakkoThank you, I also believe this should be possible with the pelt, but the recipe for the mantle requires the raw hide (not oiled/cured to become a pelt).

@VenusgateI am unable to get the head removed from the hide with any knife (that I have access to) unfortunately, which is the part I do not understand.  I tried copper shears as well.  If you have any advice regarding this, please let me know.  You are correct in that you can throw it into a barrel with limewater to get the prepared headless hide.  I have made a lot of leather this way, but only noticed after the fact that leather isn't used to keep you warm.  Thank you for the reply.

Just a somewhat unrelated piece of advice in regards to warm clothing, if you have any flax, you can make it into linen sheets and then click/drop those sheets onto your clothes to repair them by 50% per sheet. This works as any class, not just tailor!

Ah. Sorry about that. Just went into the game and you are correct. The only way to remove the head is with a pelt.

Personally, this feels like it is not intentional to me. I'd report it to the issue tracker.

Thank you for all of the feedback everyone.

@ifoz Thank you for the advice.  I have repaired my items and it works brilliantly.  Unfortunately I am just now grasping the importance of flax.

@dakko and @Venusgate Thank you for taking the time to test.  I have checked and if soaked first it will give you huge scraped hide, not rawhide unfortunately.  I will report to the issue tracker.

 Thank you once again everyone.
