PineReseen Posted February 17 Report Posted February 17 Winter is soon going to arrive in my world, and it'd be nice if I could have a greenhouse, but I only have access to quartz glass. Is it possible to build a greenhouse using that? I've looked on the wiki tutorial for greenhouses, and the in-game one but there's no mention of whether quartz glass is counted as glass or not. Thanks!
Thorfinn Posted February 17 Report Posted February 17 Used to be. Stopped making greenhouses in, I think, 1.19, but, yeah, that was the only way to grow early crops in cold starts, unless you happened to spawn close to a glacier. 1
LadyWYT Posted February 17 Report Posted February 17 I want to say that it's possible, just expensive since it will require clear quartz specifically. However, I don't bother with greenhouses much, so I would take @Thorfinn's advice here. That being said, you could always try building one out of quartz glass in creative, and see if it works. If nothing else, if you have access to bronze, you can mine out quartz veins and smelt the chunks in bloomeries to get clear glass. 1
Solution PineReseen Posted February 17 Author Solution Report Posted February 17 (edited) I decided to take @LadyWYT's advice on testing in creative (somehow I forgot I could just do that first), and it seems like it does work? It is showing the +5 degrees bonus on the plant once I planted some in the quartz greenhouse. Edited February 22 by PineReseen Reduced image quality to save space 1
Thorfinn Posted February 17 Report Posted February 17 Keep in mind you need only 50% glass on your roof... 1

In my survival world I managed to pull off this design: I really wanted to conserve my clear quartz for lanterns, so I employed this checkerboard design. Edited February 22 by PineReseen Y'know what else I want to conserve? Attachment size.
LadyWYT Posted February 17 Report Posted February 17 I think you should able to conserve even more material by sawing the blocks into slabs and then placing the slabs flush to the interior of the greenhouse. That being said, it's also easier to build with full blocks, as there's less potential for miscalculation. 1
