I love the concept of the various metal types getting more and more complex as they increase in strength, adding more infrastructure required for a full completion. Adding Damascus steel is another level of progression you can give to the player without breaking the metal realism, maybe by having an addition on the helve hammer idea, something like a power hammer perhaps? i'd really like to see what something like this could add the the game (by the way great job on the gam i love it)

I'm not sure there is an agreed upon, proven formula for what historical Damascus steel actually was.  It's mostly known from tales that might be very exaggerated.  This isn't to say I am opposed to adding it... I know of some games that include it as a pseudo magical type of metal.

There is no single clear production method for it, because "Damascus steel" is a marketing term more than an actual type of steel (especially nowadays, but historically to an extent as well). It's generally agreed upon that it is likely named after the city of Damascus, and not necessarily a specific kind of steel. Some blades referred to as Damascene don't have the typical pattern in the steel, and many blades with a similar "watered" pattern aren't Damascene, because similar steelmaking processes have been used in many different places. The majority of Damascus steel was likely wootz steel imported from India, forged into blades by local weaponsmiths.

I could see crucible steel or more specifically wootz steel being added to the game, but it wouldn't require any advanced machinery. It would likely be worse than steel from the cementation process for most purposes. Maybe it could be favorable for blades, but it would likely have to be kept broadly weaker and difficult or risky to process, to let the cementation furnace retain most of its incentives. It would likely have to be limited to certain items, and certainly shouldn't have a T5 pickaxe, to avoid short-circuiting endgame progression.

I broadly like the idea of crucible steel, but I just don't see a way to implement it in a realistic way without either keeping its use cases extremely limited or taking a wrecking ball to existing endgame progression.

I'd rather see it have the same stats as the current, but with a prettier color pattern. Thus the player would just be sinking in a bit more work to get a cool cosmetic effect.

Or potentially, just make it a cosmetic variation for tools that have been tempered for durability, and not quenched for hardness. Then it's not just cosmetic, but a clever visual indicator for what kind of tool another player is using.

Damascus steel seems like the perfect way to use steel bits from broken tool heads.

I like the idea that you might get bits and pieces of steel here and there as your tools break or when you quench too close to the sun, and you store them up in a little owl chest in the roof for a special occasion. That way by the time you've become a skilled smith, you'll have enough steel bits to make your masterwork: a Damascus steel, perfectly quenched and tempered tool, a falx, spear or maybe a hoe.
