OBAMFSpike Posted April 9 Report Posted April 9 (edited) Imagine the frustration of planting hard earned seed in the earth to spread root and take form and shoot for sky and instead a majestic Redwood time and time again produces some stunted shrubby toothpick of a majesty. (They're barely taller than seed grown pines, pictures provided.) I suggest that something be done about the miserable growth products we are left with after planting trees. The game clearly can generate massive majestic trees off of world generation so why can it not generate a like thing when a seed is planted? It's like the seeds are cursed. This isn't just the redwoods either. I clean up the ladder fuel that grows low on the trunks otherwise the shrub like appearance of the red maple (crap, CRIMSON MAPLE sorry y'all) is unmistakable. Im experimenting with some methods of growing trees to produce larger copies and I'll post if it works. No magic. Just good old survival ingenuity. (pic 3) And how about after a year in game the trees develop vines and moss like the rest of the world? I don't know much about code. But I do know that the impossible only takes longer. LadyWYT Posted April 9 Report Posted April 9 I think the main idea behind the special giant trees that occur at world generation is that they're supposed to be old-growth trees that have been there for hundreds of years, and not your average tree that's only been there for a couple decades. That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing an option for trees to mature into old-growth after around a decade or so in-game, or perhaps special rare tree seed variants that will take much longer to grow than the typical tree but will grow into an old-growth tree when they do finally mature. 3
OBAMFSpike Posted April 9 Author Report Posted April 9 While I do agree entirely about the idea of old growth trees I have to agree entirely about the idea concerning the perk for long germinating seeds and decade old trees too. Would it be impossible to have a tree increase one.....never mind. Imagine having an algorithm that increased every planted tree on the map every year and it just starts boggling my mind. I know computers can handle a lot but there are reasons that things like this do not exist. Makes me want to get a better computer and have a go at coding. Like ive never read a comment similar to that before. XD
runnybabbit Posted April 9 Report Posted April 9 perhaps the option to fertilize tree seeds/saplings to increase the chances of more growth height? 2

After the uproar about the berry bush rework? Madness! That said, I do like the idea though. It's perhaps not the most realistic thing ever, but it's a realistic enough way to allow players to have some control which trees grow really big, rather than leaving it up to chance. 1

All I will say is simply this. Go plant a forest of redwoods beside a forest of redwood and wait for it to pop. Now compare. That is all. We need something to make them look in the element and not like an attempt. Though I do largely agree with not having them all right off the first spring after germination.
KahvozeinsFang Posted April 10 Report Posted April 10 Back in 1.19 or 1.20 I was able to grow some pretty big redwoods. They were at least 3/4 the size of generated ones. Did something change since then?

It's been a while since I planted one, but like @KahvozeinsFang I recall getting some pretty big ones when I did plant. I'll see if I can toy around with it again if I get a chance, but I would chalk it up to bad luck. 1
OBAMFSpike Posted April 10 Author Report Posted April 10 Im only saying that ive planted and grown well over three dozen redwood. So yeah, I do have bad luck. If not for it id have no luck at all.
