Monduin Posted April 18 Report Posted April 18 I really wanna love this game, I just cant bring myself to playing Vanilla, and modded seems to add so much convenience and content. but for the life of me I cant figure out how anyone is supposed to play the game modded in its current state. searched so many threads about memory leaks and what mod did what, and how you need to try and narrow down which one is the culprit. but im seriously tired of troubleshooting all this and giving up on the game. if anyone is interested this is my mod list: animalcages attribute rendering library auto map maker bedspawn better firepit betterloot better ruins better traders carryon catchLedge Commonlib configlib coriandershaders danaTweaks darkvision draconis equus extraOverlays fasterleather genelib hudClock increasedStorageCapacity Jaunt Knapster Moreresin PlanksStackSizes Playercorpse Prospecttogether Seasalt Speedboat StepupContinued Vintagesticks vsimgui watersheds willsFogMod worlgenfix/terraprety while it is extensive to say the least, my PC is no slouch i think: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D 32.0 GB DDR5 RAM AMD Radeon RX 9070XT still the game hangs up and starts freezing while using over 20+ GB RAM im at my wits end please help me not refund the game. and fix the memory leak. or any suggestion on what could be the main cause.
LadyWYT Posted April 18 Report Posted April 18 First off, welcome to the forums! 4 hours ago, Monduin said: I really wanna love this game, I just cant bring myself to playing Vanilla, and modded seems to add so much convenience and content. Which is fine, but do keep in mind that while the vanilla game is optimized as much as the devs can when it comes to performance, performance can get dicey very quickly when mods are involved. Mods that add lots of new blocks, items, or entities tend to be especially performance-heavy. Running a dedicated server for the game on a different machine can help, since in that case it won't be a single machine trying to handle the entire workload. 4 hours ago, Monduin said: searched so many threads about memory leaks and what mod did what, and how you need to try and narrow down which one is the culprit. When a modded game has issues, and isn't generating a crash report or other immediate clue as to the culprit, the only real option to figure it out is to go through the log files to see if anything is amiss, or otherwise disable the mods, verify vanilla works correctly, and then re-enable and test each mod one-by-one to see when the problem reappears. It's definitely tedious, but it's generally the most effective way to figure out which mod is causing the issue, and one drawback of using a bigger modlist.
Spear and Fang Posted April 22 Report Posted April 22 (edited) While you may in fact be experiencing a mod related memory leak, keep in mind that by its very nature this game wants to use a LOT of ram, and more so when using mods. This game is written in C#/.NET and the longer you play a single session, the more ram it tends to use. C#/.NET memory usage is elastic — it grows to meet demand and may not shrink immediately, but that’s by design for performance. High “used” memory in Task Manager doesn’t necessarily mean a memory leak. A few simple ways to mitigate this, in order of importance: 1. Never exit to the main menu and then immediately load into a world again. If you exit to the main menu, exit the game completely. 2. Exit the game completely after x number of hours of gameplay. Some people say 3, but it depends entirely on personal experience. 3. Do not run any other applications while playing the game, and ensure that external startup apps (i.e. 3rd party antivirus software) are not running in the background. (not directly related to your issue, but these apps can "muddy the waters" so to speak). 4. Ensure Settings - Graphics - Optimize RAM is set to "Aggressively...". Warning: this change will probably impact performance. Anecdotally while playing game version 1.22 (lightly modded) I noticed that changing the view distance frequently in order to map more of my world seemed to cause a memory leak of sorts, or at least greatly increased memory usage. And lag. I believe that this was entirely related to the vanilla game and exiting the game completely and reloading cleared this up completely. Having said that, please consider disabling any "map" related mods to see if things improve for you. Shader type mods often use a lot of memory and are easy to disable, so also worth your consideration. This game is constantly being updated and the focus is often performance related. The trade-off for high performance is often high memory usage. Thank you for attending my TED talk. Edited April 22 by Spear and Fang
