Byrnorthil Posted April 21 Report Posted April 21 I played in my 1.21 world for something like 40 hours seeing only the occasional goat near my spawn (blue clay valley between some mountains). I never saw any animals spawn right near my base and had to travel a significant distance to get my chickens. I migrate to 1.22, walk home, and there are no less than five sows and two rams with a lamb each, and one of the sows spawned inside my animal pen I'd made for my one goat kid. Is this something that can just happen, or is it an oddity related to the migration?
Solution Foe Hammer Posted April 22 Solution Report Posted April 22 Welcome to the forums! Animal spawns can be a tad random, and can spawn in areas with grass even if they are fenced in. From my still somewhat limited experience animals tend to not spawn super close to your character. However it possible the migration adjusted the spawning to be more frequent, maybe even probable given the changes made in 1.22.0 (and rc.9 had a spawning bug that I believe was causing butterflies to spawn in game lagging hordes lol, so maybe other things got jiggled). Someone more familiar with game code may have better insight, however from my knowledge it is just a random oddity.
Helst_navngivet Posted April 29 Report Posted April 29 Its probably possible to look inside the games files in the folder VintagestoryData, but its pretty complex and requires 3rd party programs to read it properly. (DB browser for SQLite, preferably also SQLite3 and another one i think, cant remember.) if you really want to know more about it, or just find it interesting, then go for it. other than that, as Foe Hammer said, 1.22 probably did some changes to it, unintentional or intentional. regarding animal spawns, they spawn in fixed locations, and only on grass. (not sure this counts for all animals, but it does for some)

Im gonna be honest with you, i have seen other people say it and just regarded it as true, but i have experienced animals spawning in the same general area give or take 15 blocks. So no real evidence, atleast not from the games code or something like that.
Helst_navngivet Posted May 1 Report Posted May 1 I looked inside the files for goats, and "worldgen" is mentioned under criteria, where as "climate" and others of that type is mentioned separately. im going to assume that spawns are by some degree dictated by some fixed location, but not that they spawn in the exact same spot. They likely spawn in one or more predictated chunk(s) if all criteria are met. most importantly, there is a minimum distance from the player to allow entities to spawn, in the case of goats, this distance is min. 24 blocks. im guessing that in your case, the only viable/chosen spot to spawn in was in/around the animal pen. keep in mind im not very proficient in reading the game files, so take what i say with a huge gigantic BLOCK of salt, perhaps even a whole halite pillar.
