Pad, as in a laptop trackpad?

That's always going to be a rough substitute for a mouse. It's not like you won't be able to play with it, VS isn't a particularly action-heavy game. But, having used laptop trackpads to game with back in the day I can't really say your keybinds are gonna matter all that much. If anything you're technically better at hitting most of the keys since your second hand is always right there at the keyboard. Doing well with a trackpad is mostly gonna come down to practice at the end of the day. If you can get comfortable with moving the mouse and hitting WASD at the same time, you're most of the way there.

Can you help me make a good configuration to play vintage story with the pad, maybe sharing it with me???

Paging @williams_482 for advice.

You might try mods like StepUp or Knapster to help streamline some of the gameplay, especially if there are underlying physical issues.

There's also a couple of mods that add controller support to the game, but I'm not sure how well either work.

I'm afraid I don't have a ton to add.

I've played a few dozen hours on a MacBook with a trackpad, and most things work fine, but there is frustrating inconsistency with recognizing one finger (left" and two finger (right) clicks. Vintage Story also doesn't implement the Mac application standard of CTRL-click = right click, which means the usual plan B for right clicks is out the window.

That's for a trackpad + keyboard though. When you say "the pad", do you mean an iPad or other touchscreen tablet device? I've never tried to play VS with a touchscreen.

Thank you very much for the availability and attention you have given me. The problem is for a friend of mine who has hand problems and would like to buy the game but has difficulty using a mouse and keyboard. Now I am evaluating these aids and trying to solve it also to broaden the game and the community of this title, which I really care about.

Controller user here (XboxOne) What I have done is add VS to my steam library and then used Steams controller input options for that game.

It's totally configurable in the steam app to assign the controller buttons to keyboard and mouse inputs. There was a bit of trail and error in getting it were I was happy with whilst also learning the game itself. The only time I need to use the keyboard now is "c" for the character status and I still have the up and down d-pad buttons unassigned.

I do use the mouse for inventory management and crafting because I find it a bit easier but both are entirely possible with the controller.
