I cannot put my blister steel on my iron anvil. Please help.

I am progressing into steel making. I have made my refractory, I have my blister steel ingots and I am told I need to work them on an iron anvil to make them into regular steel ingots.  I try to place them on the iron anvil and nothing happens.  I have heated them in a forge fueled by coke or charcoal, I have even tried not heating them, I have tried putting them on an iron anvil with and without iron helve hammers hot or cold. Nothing is working. I've looked through a dozen different guides and videos, no one encounters this problem or specifies the equipment or fuel.

I notice in the inventory it says smelting is around 1500 Celsius, but my forge only gets to 750-800C on charcoal or coke.  As a test, I have gone into creative mode and pulled two regular steel ingots, switched back to survival and I was able to work those just fine at 800C.  Iron ingots can be worked at that temperature as well. I just can't place blister steel ingots on my iron anvil for some reason.

  • Am I missing a steel making step?
  • Am I using the wrong fuel?
  • Is there hotter equipment than the "Forge?"
  • Or is this just a bug?

I am on v1.22.0, running a few mods that shouldn't effect this. Mod list included in attached image, the warning yellow triangles on the top two say "requires v1.22.0 and game is currently on v1.22.0" (don't know what happened there either).  Please be ultra detailed and specific in your response (I'm kinda dumb). Thank you for your time.

Are you trying to work the steel at 800C? I've not exactly tested it, but iron and steel both require fairly high temperatures in order to actually work, and simple forge heating isn't enough to get much done on iron typically, and may not be hot enough to work steel. I'd recommend using a set of bellows to heat the steel to a higher temperature and see if that doesn't solve the problem.

Not sure, but this is/was a known issue for some mods--that is, they were flagged as incompatible for the game version, without actually being incompatible. That being said, mods are often the cause of strange issues. I'm not sure that's the case here, but these mods aren't the most recent version available, nor is the game, for that matter. I'd recommend updating everything to 1.22.2, since that should fix other issues that may be underlying, if not this one as well.

If you've tried heating the steel to a higher temperature before working, as well as updating your game and mods, and are still running into the issue, then I would recommend doing as @Vexxvididu says: disable your mods and test a fresh world to make sure vanilla works correctly. Once you can verify that vanilla is working, you can re-enable mods one by one and test(again, on a fresh world) as you do so to see when the problem reappears.

Good catch!!!  I didn't realize they weren't using bellows....  that's a new mechanic in 1.22 that everyone needs to be using.

RESOLVED!  THANK YOU!  I made the bellows, heated the blister steel to about 940C and I was able to put it on the anvil.  It's weird I was able to work regular steel at 800C but not the blister steel.

Probably an oversight, though perhaps the slag just needs to be at a higher temperature to actually break off. Either way, good to hear that it's working!

The funny thing about blister steel is that it needs to be at least 801 °C to work it on an anvil, just 1 °C above the temperature limit of a coke-fueled forge. I'd imagine that it's an intentional way to make bellows a hard requirement to produce steel without making the temperature threshold too much of a nuisance.

Once refined, steel needs 751 °C, 1 °C over the limit of a charcoal-fueled forge. Iron blooms need 700 °C, whereas regular and meteoric iron need 741 °C and 738 °C respectively.
